Seattle University-APNI 2017 applicants

Published

Hey!

Like so many before me, I thought I would start a thread for those applying to the Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion program at Seattle University set to begin summer 2017. I am an SU alumni who double majored in Psychology and Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies. Thinking I wanted to pursue a PhD/PsyD in developmental psychology I took a position as a volunteer research assistant at the Center For Child and Family Well-Being at the University of Washington and have been doing work for them on various research projects for the past year and a half. I also volunteered for two years in undergrad at Childhaven with at risk children and families. My first rounds of psych PhD applications completely destroyed my soul (I may be exaggerating). In the aftermath of numerous rejection emails, I continued research, but ultimately decided that it was too sterile for me. Although the study I was assisting on worked specifically with those in underserved communities, I felt that I needed to be more hands on/directly engaged with their needs rather than conducting data collections and sending them on their way. I have been eyeing out Seattle U's Family Psychiatric Mental Health DNP specialization (yes, they have made the full switch over to the DNP and I believe we will be the first cohort accepted into it). I have been in touch with Ann Hirsch, one of the program directors, and she told me that they tend to look at the GPA from your last two years of undergrad (90 credits quarter/60 semester) and would like to see at least a 300 on the GRE with a score of 4-4.5 on the writing portion. She recommended that I make an appointment to see the head of the psych track so she can answer more of my questions about the program. Dr. Hirsch told me that it sounds like I'm going to be a very strong applicant, but the thought of applying to another doctorate program completely terrifies me. ANY and ALL advice from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'll glean some tips and support from this forum as I know firsthand that applying to any graduate program is an extremely frustrating and stressful process.

I thought I was going to at LEAST get a interview. No such luck....

Don't be! There's still time to hear back. If you haven't received a letter declining your application then you are still in the running, I'm assuming. I saw your earlier post and your experiences sound amazing. If they really are looking holistically, then it sounds like you should have a shot!

I think it is much easier to relax and feel better about your position when you have a interview scheduled. I do agree with you @savusavu. If Seattle U is truly holistic, then I should have at least an interview (Not to sound "all deserving" or anything).

I'd love to know what is getting people into Interviews. I know I screwed up on my GRE, however it should not discount my other accomplishments.

Hello fellow applicants!

Thank you for getting this thread started. I applied for the FNP track and haven't heard anything yet. I am almost positive we will be hearing this week but I think the FNP track takes a little longer since there are so many applicants. At least that's what I'm hoping!

Those who have been notified that they received an interview, congratulations!

I will be checking back often :)

- Jessie

@nursejess03 are you a RN?

@NWguy28 No, sorry perhaps my username was misleading! I saw your qualifications, and it seems like you have great experience. I think they are definitely doing interviews in waves so don't worry too much. :)

To give you an idea - I am a young applicant, just finishing up my senior year of undergrad at UW in Public Health. I am working as a CNA and have had a lot of great experiences in undergrad in terms of leadership, shadowing experiences, and other work experience. I think my cumulative is somewhere around a 3.6 and my pre-reqs around a 3.8-3.9? I am very passionate about social justice hence why Seattle U is my number one choice! I'm hoping they are looking for diversity in their incoming cohort and maybe I'll have a chance even though I am young! I am very sure of the route I want to take and am eager and excited to gain the skills necessary to pursue it!

@nursejess03 yes, and thank you. I am 28 years old and have spent several years refining my clinical skills and gaining diverse experience. I have worked in Healthcare since High School, And have assumed many leadership roles in many arenas. I believe that I am Clinically and academically ready for the Rigors of the FNP program.

I have reached the point where I tutor the Pre-Reqs for this program at my local college. I even tutor several RN classes (80% of Seattle U APNI First year classes). I've been tested academically and clinically.

I am am ready for this challenge! I am PREPARED for this program without any doubt!

@NWguy28 That's wonderful! It sounds like you are definitely ready to take on the challenge of nursing school. Keep us posted and best of luck to you and everyone else!! :)

@nursejess03 Thank you. I wish the best to you as well.

@NWguy28 Please don't lose hope! They probably haven't reviewed your application yet! Your credentials are great. I did horrible on my GRE as well, but your right a GRE shouldn't weigh your application. I spoke with a grad rep and she stated they don't weigh heavily on your GRE scores especially if you have great recommendations, essay, and GPA. Keep your head in the game. You will get an interview don't get discouraged.

@jereniyiah Thank you for that, and for the piece of information.

@nursejess03 Hi Jess! I'm also finishing up my senior year in Public Health at UW! I'm positive SU looks at applications holistically. I received an invite to interview last week. In terms of what my application looks like, my GRE scores were horrible, okay-ish GPA, and CNA experience working at UWMC and Seattle Children's Hospital.

Overall, because of my age I also feel at a disadvantage.

I hope you hear back soon :)
