Seattle University-APNI 2017 applicants

Published

Hey!

Like so many before me, I thought I would start a thread for those applying to the Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion program at Seattle University set to begin summer 2017. I am an SU alumni who double majored in Psychology and Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies. Thinking I wanted to pursue a PhD/PsyD in developmental psychology I took a position as a volunteer research assistant at the Center For Child and Family Well-Being at the University of Washington and have been doing work for them on various research projects for the past year and a half. I also volunteered for two years in undergrad at Childhaven with at risk children and families. My first rounds of psych PhD applications completely destroyed my soul (I may be exaggerating). In the aftermath of numerous rejection emails, I continued research, but ultimately decided that it was too sterile for me. Although the study I was assisting on worked specifically with those in underserved communities, I felt that I needed to be more hands on/directly engaged with their needs rather than conducting data collections and sending them on their way. I have been eyeing out Seattle U's Family Psychiatric Mental Health DNP specialization (yes, they have made the full switch over to the DNP and I believe we will be the first cohort accepted into it). I have been in touch with Ann Hirsch, one of the program directors, and she told me that they tend to look at the GPA from your last two years of undergrad (90 credits quarter/60 semester) and would like to see at least a 300 on the GRE with a score of 4-4.5 on the writing portion. She recommended that I make an appointment to see the head of the psych track so she can answer more of my questions about the program. Dr. Hirsch told me that it sounds like I'm going to be a very strong applicant, but the thought of applying to another doctorate program completely terrifies me. ANY and ALL advice from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'll glean some tips and support from this forum as I know firsthand that applying to any graduate program is an extremely frustrating and stressful process.

Wow..I also applied for CNM track and saw last year that they accepted 20 people. I have been waitlisted as well. Thanks for your post @futuremidwife44. Best wishes to you and everyone else!!!

I'm sorry! Maybe things were different in previous years...

Can you please share what you've learned about their waitlist?

Hi mellie123! Sorry it took me so long to reply, it's been a busy day!

Anyway, this is basically what I was told; I asked specifically about FNP since that's my track...

She couldn't give me any exact numbers but she said they had offered admission to about 20 and about half of those have accepted. She said they interviewed double the spots available and those who were not offered admission were placed on the waitlist. There is no set cap on how many can be placed on the waitlist; it is at the discretion of the associate dean and who she wants to give the chance of admission.

Those who were offered admission have two weeks to respond. Admission offers were sent out at various points though so some have already reached those two weeks. There is still potential for movement on the waitlist. The greatest chance for movement will be in the next two-three weeks. She said they will most likely try to send out some sort of update at that point. Of course, there is still a very slim possibility that someone could drop anywhere between now and the start of the program which would bring others off the waitlist.

On a separate note; I emailed the associate dean about what I can work on for the next admission cycle and as part of her reply she said it was still early in the process and the waitlist often moves. So hopefully there is hope for some of us!

I wasn't told anything different than I expected but I know we are all anxiously waiting and eager to get any information possible! Good luck everyone!

@DNP Student. I got accepted to the ACPHN track. Got my acceptance on Feb 21

The official waitlist letter in the mail doesn't provide any concrete details about anything... I really wish they'd give some sort of perspective on your place within the waitlist. I know that OHSU assigns three different levels to the waitlist, indicating high, medium, or low likelihood of movement off the waitlist into the program.

At the time of my interview I had 4 outstanding prereq courses (finishing up A&P II tomorrow, and taking stats, algebra, lifespan psyc spring quarter) so for my application personally, if it doesn't work out this admission cycle, next time I'll have all aspects of my application complete.

Anyone from the PMHNP track hear anything? Any WL movement at all?

Good luck everyone :)

At the time of my interview I had 1 outstanding prereq course (finishing up Microbio in 8 days) so my application was not 100% completed either. I will be pursuing therapist jobs (utilizing my Master's instead of working in my temporary retail manager position between grad programs) if I don't get in for this cohort off the WL (PMHNP) and will reapply for the 2018 cohort. I'm imagining that those who were accepted to the PMHNP program will have until March 20th at the latest to respond, so WL movement should occur shortly thereafter. We'll see! Good luck to you and everyone else as well!

Just an update for those of you on the waitlist, admitted students have until April 3rd to pay their deposit or lose their spot which means that is another possible waitlist movement time :)

Hi-

I'm currently in the program and last year, 10 CNM students were accepted, fyi.

Best of luck, everyone! And don't get discouraged from applying again, if need be. I had to do that. :)

In PMHNP off the WL!

Got an email saying to check status.

Congratulations! Looking forward to meeting you. Have you joined the facebook group?

Jealous! I applied to PMHNP and am looking forward to that exact experience. I hope more spots open up.

Has anyone heard anything on the FNP track?
