Seattle University-APNI 2017 applicants

Published

Hey!

Like so many before me, I thought I would start a thread for those applying to the Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion program at Seattle University set to begin summer 2017. I am an SU alumni who double majored in Psychology and Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies. Thinking I wanted to pursue a PhD/PsyD in developmental psychology I took a position as a volunteer research assistant at the Center For Child and Family Well-Being at the University of Washington and have been doing work for them on various research projects for the past year and a half. I also volunteered for two years in undergrad at Childhaven with at risk children and families. My first rounds of psych PhD applications completely destroyed my soul (I may be exaggerating). In the aftermath of numerous rejection emails, I continued research, but ultimately decided that it was too sterile for me. Although the study I was assisting on worked specifically with those in underserved communities, I felt that I needed to be more hands on/directly engaged with their needs rather than conducting data collections and sending them on their way. I have been eyeing out Seattle U's Family Psychiatric Mental Health DNP specialization (yes, they have made the full switch over to the DNP and I believe we will be the first cohort accepted into it). I have been in touch with Ann Hirsch, one of the program directors, and she told me that they tend to look at the GPA from your last two years of undergrad (90 credits quarter/60 semester) and would like to see at least a 300 on the GRE with a score of 4-4.5 on the writing portion. She recommended that I make an appointment to see the head of the psych track so she can answer more of my questions about the program. Dr. Hirsch told me that it sounds like I'm going to be a very strong applicant, but the thought of applying to another doctorate program completely terrifies me. ANY and ALL advice from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'll glean some tips and support from this forum as I know firsthand that applying to any graduate program is an extremely frustrating and stressful process.

Hi Everyone!

I, too, am applying to SU but I think I'm the only one so far for the Nurse Midwifery program?

I was obsessively reading last year's APNI message board for SU and it does indeed seem like they weigh a lot on your statement of intent. I also am really hoping to get an interview since that's where I really shine- on paper I'm...not as impressive as y'all!

My stats:

Undergraduate GPA: 3.0 (barely! I transferred colleges 4 times and didn't study very hard- never ever thought I'd be going back to school)

Prerequisite GPA: 3.4 (I got one C in A&P 2 from a teacher who prided herself on being impossibly hard. She was. I was one of 4 people in the class at the end of the semester. I retook it over summer and got a B+) Other than that I have all As and Bs.

Experience: I have my CNA license (but CNAs make $7.25 an hour here so I can't feasibly live off those wages) and was hired as a science tutor in A&P, Micro & Genetics at my school where I'm currently taking Prereqs. I also volunteer as a women's advocate at a fertility clinic that deals with abortions (not sure if that really fits with the SU Jesuit background, but I'm passionate about reproductive rights...do you guys think I should leave that off?) and I wait tables (that's my money job...but it's still not much money!)

I've also been present at a few birth and caught my first baby on my own this month- it was my niece :) I've been attending legislative meetings with midwives in Louisiana to talk about how to better the population health and terrrrible obstetrics here (we have the highest cesarean rate in the nation!) so they midwife who delivered my sister let me take the lead.

Oh, and I'm a yoga teacher. ~auuuummmm~

I'm taking the GRE on the 14th of this month- VERY terrified! But I majored in writing for my BA so I'm hoping that I'll do well on verbal and the writing components, if not the quantitative.

As far as experience goes I'm just very passionately feminist, hang with the local midwives, volunteer with Girls on the Run coaching girls and at the fertility clinic helping women and girls. I backpacked around the world for a year which sort of sparked my interest in the medical field as a way to give back and really help heal the world. I never thought I was smart or capable enough to do this but now I'm a science tutor (NEVER saw that one coming!) and am more excited and energized by the prospect of being a midwife than I've ever been about anything! I just really want to help empower women and girls.

I went to a Jesuit college (Loyola New Orleans) for undergrad, so I understand the Jesuit mission of education as a powerful tool to help others.

Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck. I know these programs are very competitive but I'm hopeful that if SU truly does look at the entire applicant that I will stand out as someone who will fit with their mission and hopefully be a great midwife in the PNW one day :)

Hey guys! Just started my Seattle U app. Does anyone know if they're still requiring the CLEP Algebra test? I spoke to Ben last year in September and he told me I needed to take it even though I've taken a few calculus classes. But I can't seem to find any info on the website. The website has changed quite a bit since I last went on it.

It depends on when you took your classes... I am pretty sure you need to either take the CLEP or take a college level algebra class if you haven't already. You don't need to do it before you apply however. Best of luck!

Hi, EMB20064

Last year, the invites went out around Feb. 1st.

Hey guys!

There's a FB group that was made last year and a bunch of current APNIs are still apart of it. If you have questions, I'm sure they would love to help out.

Hi everyone! Can someone please direct me where the guidelines (2 page? double spaced? 1 inch margins, etc.) are for the letter of intent essay? I'm basically wrapping mine up and typically cross check with the directions, but can't find them on the website or the application itself! Ahh!

Hi Gilaria,

I called admissions a few weeks ago to ask the same question. The person I spoke with said there are not any essay formatting guidelines. He did suggest keeping the essay concise and said he prefers when they are double spaced, but it didn't sound like a requirement.

@communityhealthfan, THANK YOU so much for your response! I appreciate this so much. Goodluck to you! :)

Hi again all, was wondering if anyone spoke with admissions regarding transcripts? I prompted my schools to send them a while ago (2 weeks now) and received a confirmation that they were sent. The SU application however has yet to acknowledge that they were received. Hoping that it'll be okay to press submit now and just monitor the application in the upcoming weeks. :/

Hey Gilaria, I emailed the graduate admissions office yesterday and they said your application status won't be accurate until you submit your application. Not that it makes any sense... hope that helps!

Hi Rebareba,

I requested to join that FB group a few months ago but haven't gotten a response. Do you know if it is still active? Thanks for any info you can lend!
