Seattle University-APNI 2017 applicants

Published

Hey!

Like so many before me, I thought I would start a thread for those applying to the Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion program at Seattle University set to begin summer 2017. I am an SU alumni who double majored in Psychology and Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies. Thinking I wanted to pursue a PhD/PsyD in developmental psychology I took a position as a volunteer research assistant at the Center For Child and Family Well-Being at the University of Washington and have been doing work for them on various research projects for the past year and a half. I also volunteered for two years in undergrad at Childhaven with at risk children and families. My first rounds of psych PhD applications completely destroyed my soul (I may be exaggerating). In the aftermath of numerous rejection emails, I continued research, but ultimately decided that it was too sterile for me. Although the study I was assisting on worked specifically with those in underserved communities, I felt that I needed to be more hands on/directly engaged with their needs rather than conducting data collections and sending them on their way. I have been eyeing out Seattle U's Family Psychiatric Mental Health DNP specialization (yes, they have made the full switch over to the DNP and I believe we will be the first cohort accepted into it). I have been in touch with Ann Hirsch, one of the program directors, and she told me that they tend to look at the GPA from your last two years of undergrad (90 credits quarter/60 semester) and would like to see at least a 300 on the GRE with a score of 4-4.5 on the writing portion. She recommended that I make an appointment to see the head of the psych track so she can answer more of my questions about the program. Dr. Hirsch told me that it sounds like I'm going to be a very strong applicant, but the thought of applying to another doctorate program completely terrifies me. ANY and ALL advice from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'll glean some tips and support from this forum as I know firsthand that applying to any graduate program is an extremely frustrating and stressful process.

Same! :-)

Me too!

Been lurking for awhile and finally decided to comment :)

I interviewed last week for the PMHNP track. So now I'm just waiting and waiting....

Good luck to everyone who has interviews coming up.

Anyone know how many spots for each track this year?

Hey everyone- I am an applicant for the APNI Midwifery track. I'm nervous about not having an interview scheduled yet, especially because I live in the midwest. I called the office yesterday and they said I could do a virtual or phone interview and not to worry because they will contact me in time. Good luck to all who applied!

How did interviews go for the ones who have had interviews already?

I'm midwifery, too! I had a phone that didn't work for a couple of weeks so I called yesterday to make sure I didn't miss a call during that time. I was feeling discouraged that I hadn't gotten an interview yet, but she did confirm that they are still contacting people. Good luck to you!

Has anyone had an interview scheduled for FNP track yet? I haven't. They told us at the open house that everyone who meets the qualifications gets interviewed, so I know I shouldn't be worried... but yet I am. Thanks!

I had my interview for FNP track yesterday! Not sure how I feel about it, but humbled that I got to interview.

@skepticaligirl Their grad admissions told me something different than what you heard at open house, that they interview about double the incoming spots per track. They also said they'd be interviewing until the end of the month for those who couldn't make the dates given for the interview (mine were Jan 28 or Feb 4, not sure what other dates people got).

I hope this helps! Although it's probably not what you wanted to hear. I do know that they have also called people for interviews, rather than emails.

Thanks! Good to know. I guess I'll be emailing to check in. The person who told me that was the head of another track, so it's possible each group does it differently.

Has anyone been accepted yet? I was just reading threads from previous years and it looks like some people were accepted within a few days of their interview, in early February. Has anyone heard if they are doing it this way this year or if they made a change to notify everyone all at once?

@apple2017 - I know that interviews will continue throughout the month. Interview invites seem to be sent a few days to a few weeks ahead of the interview, so many people will be interviewed who have yet to be contacted. Don't give up hope!

To my knowledge, at least a few people have already been accepted. I am not sure how many, and I am not sure into what tracks, but we will all know more within a few weeks.

A few years ago, I applied to a different accelerated nursing program and was rejected. It was honestly heartbreaking. Looking back though, I'm glad I didn't get accepted. Instead of going to graduate school, I supported my family, worked in an amazing clinic, came to know my incredible patients and colleagues, and was able to connect with my community. Point being, I know how much this means to all of us and things will work out one way or another...no matter if we get in or not.

I know this is a stressful process and I am sending hugs!

Thanks @communityhealthfan! It sounds like you were able to get some great experience between then and now. Are you a current student? Where are you hearing that people have already been accepted? I'm curious b/c I interviewed a week and a half ago and am wondering if it's a bad sign that I haven't heard from them yet about being accepted. I'm assuming it's at least not a great sign that I haven't heard anything. Thanks for your kind words :)
