Scrubs in the OR

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hi all,

I’m a new grad, starting shortly, in an OR residency. I’ve asked the onboarding specialist about scrubs- she said all nurses wear X,  but I’ve heard OR nurses (circulating) wear scrubs provided by the hospital.

Do most hospitals provide scrubs for the OR? If so, would I need them for any other reason?

Thanks!

AORN recommends hospital laundered scrubs. No one wants pet hair or who knows what else from “outside” in a surgical environment. However, you will need to verify with the facility that scrubs are provided.

You may want a set or two to have on hand for days you aren’t in an OR- I’d rather not have to wear business casual for ACLS renewal where I don’t have access to OR scrubs.

If you are working in the Restricted Zone of the OR Suite (actual operating rooms/ theatres and sterile cores etc) you should be wearing hospital provided and hospital laundered scrubs. That is the accepted standard per AORN and other surgically related organizations.
