Nurses of the San Diego area hospital voted in the California Nurses Association about two long years ago and went nearly a year before a contract could be negotiated. During this time the RN's had already become disheartened with the decision and approved an "open shop" contract allowing nurses to decide whether California Nurses Association dues and membership were worth it. In other words the nurses union could not hold the RN's paychecks hostage with a union "security clause".
Well the California Nurses Association failed the test miserably and dues paying members dropped to less than 15%.
A petition circulating for about a month at Scripps Encinitas has collected enough support to be filed with the NLRB to request a decertification election soon. With over 85% of the nurses not supporting the union I feel the union has already lost.

It will be interesting to see how St Mary's Nurses in Reno will feel about the CNA/NNOC in the next couple of years. Nevada is a right to work state. How many RN's will actually choose to support the union in the coming years? :uhoh21:

It is important to note here that Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas remains an OPEN SHOP and that of the near 600 RN's employed at the hospital only 25, yes Twenty-Five nurses choose to be dues paying members of the California Nurses Association. It was only these nurses who voted on this "monumental" contract.
Roadblocks created by the CNA to the rest of the nurses decertification drive have been removed and a decertification vote is expected in the next few weeks. With the exception of the 25 or so dues paying members, the nurses of Scripps Encinitas are excited about removing the union and becoming 100% union free!

Blatant disrespect? A slap in the face?
Over 300 nurses at Scripps Encinitas have a choice right now, not tomorrow but right now. They can immediately sign on with the California Nurses Association, pay their dues and the union wins now.
This has not been the case. Scripps Encinitas is an open shop, nurses have a choice, they have clearly decided. I have been told that less than 25 nurses remain dues paying members and a few of them are not happy.
A petition was passed around and more than enough nurses signed it to qualify for a decertification election. Quite a few others support the petitioners but would rather let their voices be heard in a secret ballot election.
The California Nurses Association wants to stifle their voices, having filed unfair labor practice charges to prevent an election and bully the nurses into submission. The current contract is up in March. No doubt the CNA would prefer to force upon all the nurses at Scripps a closed shop. This would end free choice and force all nurses to pay up or face termination. Choice ends.
Is this in the best interest of the nurses? Is this in the best interest of the community that this hospital serves?
