Scope of practice ? RN able to perform task ?

Would like consensus from fellow nurses whether they believe this falls under the scope of practice for RN in Florida without peri-op or RNFA program (additional certification).

Job entails the RN without direct supervision of a MD/PA/NP/DO in a office practice to perform the following:

application of injectable anesthetic under the skin, clean site, insert surgical trocar instrument subcutaneously parallel to skin, insert medication through trocar then remove instrument, maintain hemostasis, use of steri-strips/suture. Example procedure can be found Hormone Pellet Insertion Procedure | Trocarkit – Trocarkit.com.

Constructive comment- ok, here's one for you- if it's out of a nurses scope of practice it doesn't matter if a doctor or NP is in the room "supervising". Out of scope means out of scope. We've had doctors want nurses in our ICU to push meds that are out of scope during bedside procedures. The BON won't care diddley squat that a doctor or pa or np was in the room and told the nurse to do it. It honestly baffles me that an advanced practice nurse doesn't know that. It's something EVERY nurse should know.

Bottom line is that if a nurse is doing something so invasive or critical that they require supervision by a doctor, then they are most likely out of their scope of practice. I find it kind of insulting to think my nursing practice needs supervised.

You got your answer from the BON- they want a declaratory statement from the RN. It's not the answer you want, but it's the official answer.

Thank you for the information Medic/Nurse for your feedback. There is no specific protocol in place with education requirements and there has been a possible legal implication approaching the practice. I was investigating the circumstances to determine how we could protect the practice. Appreciate your feedback.
