I am an LPN nursing student and am working on a research paper about the scope of practice for the LPN. Anyone here from CT that can tell me what new things they are now allowed to do as an LPN, that they learned once out of school? Starting and maintaining IVs, CVAD maintenance...?

I have posted in the Ct Nurses forum as well, looking for some info.

Thanks

Welcome to allnurses.com! I would contact the CT BON for more information.

I've been cogitating on your question for a bit. I think that what you might want to do is see if you can get some job descriptions as well as a list of procedures or skills to be demonstrated by a new LPN employee in an acute hospital and an LPN in a nursing home. It would also be nice if you could get an LPN from each to talk with you. The place to start would be to contact the nursing educators in the acute hospital (they might be more open to talk with you) and a friendly DON in a nursing home. These most likely are the people who would be involved in the orientation of a new LPN employee. I would try to get a written job description and one of these lists of LPN skills from each of them to help you in writing your paper since you can use them in your bibliography. Sometimes you can find these things on the Internet by doing a search. The problem, however, is that they may not be from your state.

I was also looking at the CT board of nursing site last evening and couldn't find any link to the state nursing law and didn't have time to do a law search. In any case, I think maybe that will get you started. Yes, you will probably have to make a few phone calls. That probably was part of the purpose of the assignment. When I was in my BSN program we were told many times that as a profession we all have an obligation to help each other out. That includes inquiries from students such as you looking for information just as you are looking for. If you run into people who get nasty just shrug your shoulders and move on. Unfortunately, not everyone acts professionally.
