The University of Washington (UW), established in 1861, is a public flagship university.
UW School of Nursing utilizes two teaching and research hospitals, the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. UW was the first university-affiliated nursing school of the West Coast and second in the country to offer a baccalaureate program.
Undergraduate
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the UW Seattle campus is a two-year nursing program that prepares students for a career as an RN.
Prerequisites (not all inclusive)
- Minimum college level 2.0 cumulative GPA
- Ninety college quarter credits prerequisite courses
- Minimum 100 hours paid or volunteer health care experience
Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing
The UW School of Nursing offers a fast-track nursing program for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field. This program offers an option to complete the BSN curriculum in five back-to-back quarters in about half the time of the traditional two-year (six quarter) BSN program. Prerequisites include a non-nursing baccalaureate degree and a minimum college level cumulative GPA of 2.8.
Graduate
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
This program focuses on Clinical Informatics and Patient-Centered Technologies (MS-CIPCT) and is open to students with a bachelor's degree in any discipline. The program is a minimum of fifteen months to complete with full-time study, or two years on a part-time basis. Students can complete the program entirely online with in-person attendance required at the Annual Meeting and Orientation session in September of the first and second year.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The UW School of Nursing Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD) program is designed for students who want to become top leaders in nursing research and welcomes applicants with a baccalaureate degree in any field.
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
This program joins with agencies around the Puget Sound region to gain hundreds of hours of hands-on clinical experience.
Specialty Programs
Nurse Midwifery
The DNP program offers a track in Nurse-Midwifery (NM), which prepares nurses as primary care providers for women throughout their lifespan. Students learn to practice in diverse settings with a focus on women and women's health. The program entails the delivery of infants as well as a full spectrum of gynecological and preventative care.
Prerequisites (not all inclusive)
- Bachelor's or master's degree in nursing from CCNE or NLN accredited nursing program
- Minimum 3.0 GPA for last 90 graded quarter credits
- Descriptive and inferential statistics completed within 5 years
- Active, unrestricted Washington state RN license
- APRN license that must also be active and unrestricted in Washington state (if applicable)

Palliative Care Certificate
The interprofessional Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care is a joint partnership offer through the UW Schools of Nursing and Medicine and is co-sponsored by the Cambia Palliative Center of Excellence.
This curriculum includes weekly interactive distance learning, online modules, peer and faculty mentoring with world-renowned expert faculty, and quarterly in-person workshops. Additionally, the certificate includes VitalTalk® training, which is a highly regarded national model for expert serious illness communication skills.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
This graduate certificate is designed for individuals seeking to expand their existing scope of practice as an APRN and are currently a clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist.
Family Nurse Practitioner
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track within the Doctor of Nursing Practice program focuses on delivering primary care to patients ranging in age from childhood through geriatrics.
