University of Washington (UW) - Summer 2019 ABSN

Published

Hello everyone,

who is preparing to apply for the UW ABSN program? Applications start on August 2018 and school starts on June 18th 2019. I was informed I have to do the prerequisites so I decided to that in a local community college. Any body having hard time or on the track of doing their prereq??

All feedbacks welcome, and any kind of helpful hints that has helped you!

Thank you!

Hello! :) I am also applying to the UW ABSN program for Summer 2019! I'm so glad to have found someone else who is preparing for this process. I have finished about half of the pre-requisites (Microbiology w/ lab, Nutrition and A&P 1 w/ lab) and I am planning on taking Chemistry and A&P 2 this Spring term at Portland Community College. I have a BS in Human Development and Family Sciences with a Psychology minor, and it looks like that degree has satisfied most of the non-science prerequisites. How's it going for you so far? :)

Hi,

Are you two still on track to apply for the 2019 cohort? I'm applying too and would LOVE to chat about the application!

I really have no idea where I stand in terms of being a competitive applicant or not, but appreciate that UW seems to take a more holistic approach. My cumulative GPA is super low, just barely over 3.8, but my prerequisite GPA is a 3.85 so I'm hoping that helps. I think I've got decent health care experience but really have nothing to compare it too.

Anyways I'd love to restart the dialogue!

Hi All!

I'm also applying for the 2019 ABSN at UW. I just saw today that they have confirmed this will now be a fall start, completing the program in 4 quarters instead of a summer start with 5 quarters. Is anyone else nervous about the amount of work that will now be in an even shorter timeframe?

How are your applications going so far? I only have 2 prereqs left - O Chem & A&PII. I'm starting OChem later this month and will take the last class either next spring or summer.

I only did 100 hours of healthcare experience since I've been living in Europe for the past 6 years - I spent a 3 week vacation to come back to the US to complete the 100 hours at my university's health center. I'm guessing that will be far less than most other applicants but I'm hoping since I was able to do a lot in that short time and learn a lot that it doesn't hurt my application...

Background is a BA in History and then I completed an MBA in 2014. I've wanted to do nursing ever since I graduated with my undergrad but was waiting until I moved back to the US which ended up being several years longer than I originally expected.

I'd love to hear about everyone else's experiences with applying, where you are in the process, etc.

Hi all, I just finished my BS in biopsychology in June but I've wanted to transition to nursing for several years now. This will be my first nursing application ever! Am I the only one who's already defeated? I've been reading forums for hours and it sounds like people with extremely high GPAs and years of hands on healthcare experience still get rejected...I considered myself a strong applicant until I read previous year's forums. It's not just a UW problem though it's happening nationwide due to the lack of nursing teachers and clinic space.

You guys can do it!! I am in the current ABSN cohort at UW and can tell you it is amazing. Don't try and compare yourself to others too much, our class has a wide variety of healthcare experiences/prereq grades, so give it a go! They are making big changes for next year that I don't know a ton about but if you have any questions about the application process, let me know! Good luck!

Submitted app last week. Who knows? Figured I should at least throw my hat in the ring. Taking AP1 this quarter, AP2 winter. If I get in, I'll take O-chem. No other program I'm looking at requires O-chem. All other prereqs done. Ack- it is what it is!

Can you share a bit about what the schedule is like?

Unfortunately, not really. They make it sound like they are really changing the program for next year. But for us, we had class ~8-4 Monday, 8-2:30 Tuesday, Clinical/lab all day wednesday and Friday and Thursdays off.

Hi everyone!

I'm applying for the program starting Fall 2019 as well! I didn't expect the chemistry requirements, since no other schools I'm applying for are requiring the 2. I have a bachelor's in Geography and really hope to get in to UW! I'm from San Francisco, but Seattle seems amazing (I've been there a few times). I've wanted to do nursing since I started university, but took some detours along the way. So now I'm finally applying. It's great to meet you all!

@shakethedust kind of an odd question, but do you know if you get drug tested for clinicals?

Hi everyone! Just wondering if I even stand a chance applying! I graduated in 2017 with my bachelors in biology with a 3.4. My freshman year I got a 2.4, and since then I have gotten a 3.5 or above each of my last 6 semesters. My pre-rec GPA is around a 3.3. I have 4000 healthcare hours as a paid ICU CNA, surgical Unit CNA, and I have just began volunteering after finishing my EMT certification. I also self taught myself conversational Spanish after several medical missions to Guatemala. My grades are terrible but my experience is alright, just wondering where I stack up!
