The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public institution that was founded in 1969. The UAB School of Nursing was chartered as the University of Alabama School of Nursing (UASON) in 1950.

The School of Nursing offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs including the PhD in Nursing degree and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, which offers BSN, MSN and Nurse Anesthesia Pathways. Also, there are more than 15 specialty and subspecialty nurse practitioner tracks, dual degree options, advanced nursing executive majors in administration and informatics, and an Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP) program for students who already have one degree.

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Traditional Student

  • First-time college students who complete the first two years at UAB and then apply for admission to the School of Nursing for the upper-division nursing curriculum
  • Work with an assigned UAB Pre-Nursing Advisor during the first two years at the university
  • Students who complete their prerequisites at UAB are eligible for priority consideration for admission to the upper-division nursing curriculum
  • Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and then be eligible for state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Registered Nurse Mobility (RN-BSN)

This program is available for the student who has currently obtained a Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/ASN) and is licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in their individual state. Clinical practicum will be undertaken in the state of licensure. Time to completion varies from two semesters (full-time students) to 3 to 5 semesters (part-time students).

Graduate

The RN Mobility RN to MSN Plan (Second Degree)

The program is designed for the RN who possesses an ADN/ASN and seeks the MSN.  Part of the focus of the program is to prepare the nurse for advanced nursing practice.

Accelerated Master's in Nursing Pathway (AMNP)

This program is available for nurses who currently have a degree and are looking to move forward with a Master's in Nursing.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is for the advanced learner who wishes to specialize in their field of nursing. This program offers more than 17 specialty tracks, including a variety of nurse practitioner options, clinical nurse leader, nurse anesthesia, nursing education, nursing informatics, and nursing and health systems administration.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Nurse Anesthesia

Nurse Anesthesia Post-BSN Admission (not all inclusive)

  • BSN from regionally accredited institution
  • Active, unencumbered RN License in the state where student will be completing didactic and clinical
  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
  • Minimumj 3.0 GPA on science prerequisite courses
  • Grade of 'C' or higher in all science pre-requisite courses
  • At least one-year RN experience in a critical care setting including: CCU, CVICU, MICU, Neuro ICU, SICU, Burn/Trauma ICU, Pediatric ICU; the following areas are not considered: PACU, Neonatal ICU, Cardiac Step Down, Bone Marrow Transplant, Telemetry, or Emergency Room
  • 3 letters of professional reference
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (no waiver process); no minimum score
  • Personal interview with the selection committee
 

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

The PhD in Nursing offers a dual-format, distance accessible or live format, that includes required on-campus meetings (approximately one week per semester) and the use of on-line technology.

Coursework can be completed in 2 years by a full-time student. The graduate school requires that all students complete the entire program, including the dissertation, within seven years of matriculation.

Accreditation

The Baccalaureate, Master's, and PhD in Nursing and joint Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The Post-BSN to DNP Pathway for Nurse Anesthesia is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
