Schools with no waitlist and not as competitive for ABSN or MSN

Published

Hello everyone~

I feel I am losing hope with going to nursing school. MY goal is to be a nurse practioner or Nurse anethesia. I currently have a 2.9 undergrad in Business Management and a 3.3 MBA degree. I have no science or medical background. I am looking for a school that is not so competitive and that has no waiting list anywhere in the US. I currently live in South Fl. Looking to relocate. I was looking into the schools in OKC and they seem to have a good program so that is my 1st on the list.

Any advise?

I just feel that time passes and I'm still stuck in the same dead-end job and really want to go into the medical field. I am open to any school anywhere in the country, but I am looking for ABSN program.

Thanks so much!

Your goal may be unrealistic. Why don't you start out by taking some of the nursing pre-req classes at your local community college or state U. Start with the anatomy and physiology classes. To become either a NP or NA you are going to need to become a nurse first. Why not focus on taking the first steps and see if you have the ability first. If the school doesn't have any standards, it is going to cost you $100,000/year or once you graduate, no medical facility is going to want to hire you. Your BS and MBA will not help you get into a nursing school but your future science grades will. I also want to add that nurse anesthetist schools are extremely competitive. They have to be due to the nature of the job and the number of students applying.

Sounds very unrealistic. Start with getting your RN first. You'll need to start taking science classes right away. Go to your local community college to find out which pre-reqs you'll need to get into a nursing school. Your BS and MBA will not help you understand homeostasis but a year of anatomy and physiology just might. There is no NP or NA school that will even look at you without an RN.

Thanks so much for your advise. Yes, my goal is to get my RN first and take baby steps to get to my goals.

I need to take my pre-reqs. Which I will start in the fall due to a new job that I am taking which was a great offer and need ot be traveling a lot. However, what I meant with the waitlist was that I am looking for schools that are not so competitive, I know it will be hard to find. Let's see what happens.

I haven't really researched the nurse anesthetist much since my calling is more to be NP. However its my 2nd option. I imagine it must be very competitive.

Thanks,

:)

Okay, that sounds way more realistic. I have a BS in business admin and it gave me 1 point out of 50 + points I need to get into nursing school. It did help me get through my pre-reqs a little faster. I still had to take 14 classes and get my CNA. What I've seen is that the less competitive the school, the more $$$ it will cost. We simply can't justify spending $40,000 per year at one of the private colleges so my goal was straight A's. The private school also has a lot of applicants and a short list of accepted students. Let me say that the science classes are more interesting and meaningful than the international marketing and economics classes I took for my bus degree. Best wishes on your path.

Direct-Entrty Anesthesia Programs - Nursing for Nurses

Found this interesting post from several years ago on direct-entry colleges.

There are plenty of second degree BSN schools in the DC area. I can think of at least 6 off the top of my head. Why don't you look around your area for a second degree program? Typically all you need is your A&P and micro, your BS, and you are in the program. I know that the BSN programs are much less competitive in this area than the RN programs are.....

or what JROregon said above! That looks right up your alley.

thank you so much for your advise. i will def check out the link you have provided to keep researching on this. like you said most schools are expensive. i have also noticed that the more affordable schools have along wait list and are very competitive at least in my area in fl.

where are you in the path? i need to take a & p 1 & 2, micro, & chemistry and biology.. hopefully in the fall i will start, i made the mistake of taking 2 sciences class and a lab this semester in the winter 2010 and had to drop because i have a stressful job and was working 45-50 hours plus my classes.. i was losing my mind lol..

i wish all the best too!

thank you so much for answering my post. i love the dc area i was looking for a job there in what i currently do which is paralegal work to make the move and then begin my journey in taking my pre-reqs there, but couldn't secure a job. so i am still in fl:idea: i dont like florida i lived here all my life and am looking for a change. thank you so much for your words :)

I know how you feel sometimes. Lived here my whole life, but for the most part it's great. It would be nice to get out and see a bit of the world before it's all over though! Sounds like you could find quite a niche for yourself right here. We do have loads of law firms you could work at while you are in school!

Hubbie and I went to maryland to the germantown area and it was so beautiful.. We loved it.. Its a bit pricey but very upscale. You know I have been applying alot but havent had any luck with securing a legal position. But I would love to live in DC surrouding areas. In what part of the nursing process are you in now?

I am in part two of psychology now and then I have one more prereq (microbiology) and two more co-requisits (communications and pharm), then I will apply. I am working full time now and have kids, so I am waiting to get all done with ALL pre and co-requisits before I throw in the towel and go for it. That way I will hopefully make the most of my time in nursing school. Wish I had a BA, because the track is much faster with a second degree program, and easier to get in, but I refused to listen to my parents when I should have....live and learn! Germantown is nice. Don't give up, I think you have an excellent plan!
