NYC School Nurse Hiring Process?

Specialties School

Hi all,

I am hoping to get some additional background on what the hiring and placement process is like for a NYC DOH/DOE School Nurse position as I'm attending an open interview day in a few weeks.

I've looked around online and it looks like even though the interview is in April, official offers may not come until mid-summer, and the positions don't start until the new school year in September. Is that true? Also I saw you don't get your school placement until after you accept the offer? That seems frustrating as location of the school will determine whether I take this offer (I'm coming in from Jersey and a school in Queens or BK won't really work for me). Do they typically honor preferences?

Also, what is the background/vetting process like?

Thanks!

Do you get the entire 6weeks pay or only 2weeks pay on your first pay check

No, the first pay check covers the first 2 weeks only.

Hi I realize this is an old thread, but I'm didn't take the job last time, however I went to the orientation again (long story) and we are supposed to be started orientation in February. Did you get assigned to the school that you were already working at with the agency? Thanks. I've been covering at a school through agency for a few months...not sure if I'll be assigned here though.

You can definitely ask to be assigned to the school, but there are no guarantees. Because of the shortage they try to fill schools that have very high need (I.e. diabetics) first. But I've seen nurses make requests with the supervisors. Try it.

Hi! Would someone be able to point me in the direction of where to apply for a DOE RN position? I can't seem to find it anywhere!

I'm not sure if they are currently hiring directly. All my DOE nurse friends started as DOH and then transferred over.

I was placed in a school that is not in the same borough in which I live.

Check the DOE website office of school Health. If not apply thru DOH and can transfer after.

Hi.. I know this is an old post but I saw a few people commented that they worked through an agency as an RN in the NYC public schools. I was looking to do per diem work in the schools for now while I have small children at home, and then eventually work as a full-time school nurse. I know they have a job fair coming up and the test is being offered but I am wondering if that is only for full-time positions? If you did agency work...how did you go about doing that? Did you like your agency and what was the pay like?

Thanks!
