I will be orienting in the district in January as a sub nurse.

i have only ever worked on the hospital setting.

What can I expect? Any specific questions I should be asking? What do you want your sub to do in your absence?

thank you!

Subs are used for different things. In my district, we don;t have subs, but in the district where my own two kids go to school, they hire subs for various things. Obviously the most common is for the day-to-day if a nurse is out sick, at a conference, etc. But they also hire subs to help with screenings and other school-wide tasks that are majorly time-consuming. Sometimes the subs are hired to run the office and see kids so the regular nurse can process the mountains of paperwork, especially at the beginning of the school year. I subbed for the nurse at our high school (I am in the K-1 campus) and I had her orient me to her computer tracking system, the keys and procedure for the med cabinet, names of any "red flag or high alert" students, where her emergency kit was of I had to race to a classroom, how to use the phone to call front desk, teachers, etc. I am sure there was more :) I would have her walk you through a "typical" day and what things might come up. Good luck! I have often thought about subbing next year since the neighboring districts, as well as my kid's district are always in need. Would be nice to make my own work schedule.
