Scholarships or Tuition Assitance

Published

Hello,

I lost my job about 2 weeks ago which really made my mind up to go back to school. I did get a nice severance package, and will be collecting unemployment until I get into school in January.

The question I had is where could I possibly get scholarships, or free money for school/Tuition Assistance. I do live in the state of MA if that helps. If anyone out there what so ever has any clue or information that would be helpful to me, please post.

Thanks So Much

You need to file your FAFSA form. From that, the school will be able to determine if you qualify for state and/or federal grants. You are also able to take out subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Contact your school for scholarship information. Your financial aid office should be able to offer you a lot of advice.

Check out your state's department of labor. There might be workforce retraining funds you could qualify for. Also check out the dept of education website- there will be info there on state specific grants and scholarships. But definitely fill out a FAFSA and talk to your school's financial aid office- since FAFSA goes off the previous year's tax returns, you might not look like you need much financial aid on paper. Your school's FA office might want proof of your unemployed status but be willing to go by your current income numbers rather than what your tax returns say you earn.
