Scheduled to take the SEC Assessment but denied visa

Hello to all my fellow RNs.

I am scheduled to take the SEC assessment in a couple of months, but when I applied for a temporary resident visa in our canadian embassy, my application was denied. I was pretty surprised when I got the denial. I have a multiple entry tourist visa to the US, and I've been there twice already and did not overstay. I do not have a criminal record. I am currently employed here in the Philippines as a Staff Nurse in a surgical ward, and was given an approved leave of two weeks to go to Canada and take the exam. I admit that personally, I do not have a significant amount of funds since the salary of nurses here is very low, but I included a letter of parental support because my parents will be helping me out in paying for my airfare and stay in Canada. It was really a shock to me to be denied.

Now my two options are:

1. Submit another application for a temporary resident visa, and perhaps include a letter explaining that I only plan to take the exam and go home immediately. Do you think this will help my application? And perhaps I should include a complete itinerary of what I'm going to do?

2. Or accept that I cannot go to Canada and take the SEC. Which is really frustrating and saddening, and I'm just not the type to accept things like this so easily. I mean, well, the fee for application to become a registered nurse in CA is not a small amount that I could just easily let go.

To any Filipino nurses out there who were able to go to CA on a temporary resident visa to take the SEC, can you give some pointers on what you included in your application to be approved a visa?

Thank you in advance.

Could just be that Immigration Canada doesn't feel the need for more overseas nurses at this moment in time. When they look at the level of unemployment in the various provinces, they can see that there is a lack of full time work for Canadian nurses and don't forsee a need to bring in IENs.

The IENs who came from the Phillipines back in 2008 to my hospital are finding it very difficult to find jobs with enough hours to allow them to remain here.

Nursing is NOT the golden ticket to a new land anymore.

Hi hmist,

You can try applying again but if your present situation have no significant changes that can convince the visa officer, chances are slim to get a positive result on your TRV application. My 2-cent advice is, since you are currently employed as a nurse and have at least ayear work experience, ideally should be 2 years or more, you can try the assessment for immigrant application for Federal Skilled Worker category at CIC website. At least the risk of you getting rejected will be minimal if your score in the assessment is 67 points or more. Good luck .

Hi hmist,

I would like to know which province are you supposed to take your Sec? How long did you wait for their feedback? If you don't mind.

I also wonder why your not been granted a Visa since you already have a proof that your not going to overstay. Immigration officers are really stern but you have the right to know 'why'..

Don't lose hope, reapply for the tourist visa multiple entry or the federal skilled route since you have a paid hospital experience.

hi! i have the same question as calamarifries, if you don't mind... how long does it take to be assessed and what is actually required in SECs?... thanks!
