Schedule of Resident Nurse at Emory?

Published

I got a job at Emory and I wanted to get an idea of how they train new grads. I know that I'll have orientation for 1 week but I don't know what happens after that. The shift manager told me that I would be working 8-hour shifts for a good portion of my training. ;

Has anyone gone through this that can give me an idea of what to expect? Will I be in the classroom for a while? When will I start working on the floor?

Hi optimusRN,

I don't have a answer to your question I instead have a question for you. I also applied to Emory's new grad residency program. One for periop and another for oncology the status on both apps say under consideration. Do you know if they are still interviewing for these positions?

I'm not sure if they are still interviewing or not. I would imagine they are since the start date isn't until the 21st. But I'm not completely sure since I won't be working on either of those floors. Hope you can get a call!

Thank you for responding optimusRN. Well maybe I still have a shot since it doesn't start until the 21st. I was just wondering because my apps have been under consideration since early Jan. Did ever follow stat of your application or did you just recieve a call?

Congratulations on your job! I just found out I got a job in the nurse residency program at Emory as well. I am in the same boat as you. They have sent me the schedule break down for the first week of orientation, but besides that I am not sure what shift or anything I will be working. During my interview they said new grads typically work a 40 hr work week including the classroom time. I don't know if that means 8hr classroom time, an 8hr shift on the floor and 2 12s or what. I am sure they will break everything down during orientation. If you get any other info please let me know. See you the week of the 21st :)

Youcandoit: I think I only checked my status after they called. I applied around feb 3 I believe and got a phone call a few days later. They should email updated as you move along.

Studentnurse: awesome congrats to you too! Will you be at midtown or the main campus? I'm hoping to get more info too. I wanted to take a couple trips but I can't plan when I don't know how my schedule will be.

I just finished a residency at Emory. We did 1 week of general orientation, 1 week of dept. orientation, then started working in the unit with our preceptors with 1 8 hr class weekly. Could be different depending on the unit you're on. We never had our schedule very far in advance. Also, can be hard to plan travel b/c you have to work your preceptor's schedule. But the time goes by fast & you'll be on your own before you know it. Congrats on the job & welcome to Emory.

Thanks for the info! I probably won't do any traveling until August or September anyways so I should be good. I'm looking forward to starting. I'm excited and nervous. How was your experience?

Emory is a two year contract for a Residency Program, right? Also, what do you owe $$$ wise if you break the contract? say you stay for 18 months instead of the whole 24 months?

OptimusRN, the experience was good over all. Would have preferred more hands-on skill days to lecture-type classes, & I think they are changing to that due to feedback from those of us who just finished.

Maryland88, I think it's $10,000 for breaking the contract, but I'm not sure if it's prorated if you do part of the time. Maybe HR could answer that question for you if you aren't comfortable asking your dept manager.

oh wow, $10,000 is a ton of money... I will check into HR then, thank you.

Hey there,

I'm still in nursing school (one year left!!) and I'm doing my externship at EUH. I was just curious how yall found out about the residency job. Did you just keep looking until something popped up on the job page or did Emory contact yall someway? I know I've got a little way to go but I figure it's great info to know now. Thanks! :p
