SCC? I'm a little nervous...

Published

Well, here goes. I am currently a teacher. I have a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication. I have a fairly good GPA (3.3). This spring and summer I am taking the 5 pre-req classes I need to apply to the RN program. I might have one more to do in the fall... it depends on if the class I need opens up. I'm sure I can ace those classes just fine. I am not sure if I have to take the NET since it's just reading comp and basic stuff (or that's the impression I've gotten... I could be wrong). If I did, I'm sure I could ace that too. It has to be easier than the GRE, right? And I did well on that one.

So how competitive is SCC's RN program? My fear is that I will go through all of this and then get denied entrance to the program. Does anyone know their selection process? It doesn't look like there is even a waiting list... you just have to reapply. I absolutely can't do any daytime classes since I have to keep my day job. I also don't want to be stuck teaching for the next five million years while I wait to get into the program. I'd like to be done with all of it before I'm 30. Anyone know anything about this?

hello,

Im not sure about SCC specifically, but I know that most of the generic track RN programs in the area have about a 1yr+ wait. But I think u are right about SCC having u reapply each year, so u may have a good chance of getting in that program. The way I see it is, either way at least you are already in a profession and able to support yourself while you wait. Keep in mind that the part time program starts once a year and the full time program starts once a year, not sure which one starts in the spring and which in the fall.

If you have to wait a year to get in, think of it as a year is gonna pass regardless of whether you are waiting to get in or not. If you want to be a nurse, go for it. Dont let the wait discourage you. Im ended up becoming an LPN while I waited for an RN spot to open. Now Im doing the LPN to RN transition course at Valencia. Anyway, I also wanted to mention that if u dont mind paying more money or getting loans, etc, Herzing College recently started an RN program. Im pretty sure there isnt a waiting list since its private and more expensive. You may find that paying more and finishing sooner will allow the increase in salary to make up the cost of schooling. For SCC, Get your science classes out of the way first, bc they go by the date u finished the pre reqs as part of the criteria, with science being most important. Stay online during drop/add week and Im sure u can get into whichever class it is u are trying to get into.

Good luck to u and keep us posted!

The SCC part time one starts in January. I am trying for Jan. '08 since I don't have the pre-req's done for this Jan. I am also trying to sell my house and move somewhere I can hopefully live on just my husband's salary so I would have more flexibility in programs. I am stuck needing my salary where I am right now. And stuck in a boring, awful city no less. Affordable, but really not the place to be.

I would much rather do the accelerated BSN at UCF, but it's days full time. I just feel that I am out of options with the part time track since SCC is about the only place to offer it. It's quite a horrific drive through traffic from where I am to get to downtown O-town too.

And, no, I really am not interested in taking on tons of loans. I still have my first useless degree I'm paying for. I shoulda done this 8 years ago! Lesson learned I guess. I just don't want to be stuck teaching any friggin' longer than I have to. It's my 3rd year and I am hating it more and more each day. I just want a job where I get paid for my time and I can go home without worrying about the crushing workload that's waiting for me. *sigh*

lol @ "first useless degree".....understandable. Well that sounds like a great idea if u can move somewhere less expensive so u wont have to work and can go full time. I think with your previous degree and gpa, you have a good shot. I applied to SCC a couple of times but I wasnt finished with my pre reqs at the time I applied. keep your chin up, I know how it feels to feel frustrated with your current situation and impatient. Im just now starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel myself.

Thanks. It's nice to have some encouragement. I would love to move out of this boring hicksville town, but I might be stuck in my affordable starter home for the forseeable future. The market sucks now. That means I am stuck in my job unless I could find something stable that pays almost the same. I doubt it. I also need to get into microbiology this semester. It's not offered at a time I can take it in the summer (the semester starts before school gets out for me :scrying: ). Can you take a class at two CC's at once? I could possibly look into taking that at DBCC or something. At this rate I'll be done with pre-req's, but not until the end of Fall semester '07. That's cutting it a little close. Do you know if you have to take the NET exam if you've got a previous degree? I guess I should just take whatever I can to get more competitive.

yeah u will need to take the NET. You will be fine, its just basic reading comprehension and math like u said. Yes, u can take a class at more than one cc at a time. I took micro at dbcc this past summer as well. I liked it bc I got it over with in 6 weeks. 6 weeks of torture, yes, but still only 6 weeks none-the-less...lol. btw, the students at dbcc must be slackers bc they had plenty of open seats in all their science classes days before classes started :chuckle

I'm actually in the SCC evening and weekend program that started this term. It was easy for me getting in; I have a 3.3 GPA also. It is a no wait; you just have to reapply if not accepted. Like you I have to keep my full time job so having this program available is great. So keep on plugging away at your pre-reqs. and you'll be fine.:)

Cassiesky, do you know when the program filled up? I would love to go straight for my RN through this program, but it's doubtful I would be able to get through all of the prerequisites in time to apply.

I wish they started it more often than once a year in January....

Umm that's a good question. I applied for early acceptance about the 1st week in September of 2006. Early acceptance required that all of pre-req. were completed and you had a 3.0 recalculated GPA. General admission/acceptance was in the first week of Oct I think. So honestly I don't know when the seats were filled during the early acceptance or general acceptance given that there were 66 seats available for this program.

What are the classes that you still need to take?

yeah, this program sounds very ideal for u, busylady! Good luck!

I basically have to take all of the pre-req's. I'm not enrolled in anything right now for the spring semester. And I don't think I can get them all out of the way this summer during my summer vacation (I am a teacher.) But I am at least going to get a head start.

In the meantime I have been accepted into the Orlando Tech LPN part time/evening program that starts this August. :w00t: So I am probably going to go the LPN route just because I am impatient and I want to get started *now*! LOL ....

Then later I will bridge from LPN to RN, or possibly I will go straight for the BSN transition program at UCF, because I already have a bachelors degree in another subject. But SCC sounds like a great program....

Yay! Im so happy for you!!! Congratulations! The LPN to RN program at Valencia is NO JOKE, its kicking my butt! But Im still getting organized. Our first exam is tomorrow so I can figure out what I might need to do differently. The good news is, a lot of the stuff I already know bx I learned it at ORLANDO TECH so its just a matter of refreshing my memory. Its alot of work but the fact that its mainly online makes it very convenient if u have to work. There is a lot to do each week and Im a procrastinator so Im always rushing to get it all done at the end of the week and then start all over for the next week the next day! Good luck in the LPN program, its hard work but so worth it in the end! Also, at Otech make sure u call every once in a while to check to see if u can get in earlier, sometimes they will move u up. You might get to start in the summer even!
