saskatchewan nursing?

Thank you for the response. I'm looking forward to our trip up to Saskatoon. It's getting so hot here it's impossible to go outside! I dread packing at the end of May, it'll be dreadful.

It's nice to know at least a few names of people up there. It doesn't feel as though I'm moving into a totally strange city!

HI.

Although I can't give you any help regarding your questions of Saskatoon.....I just wanted to "pop" in and say "hi". I live in Saskatchewan. I am currently enrolled for the next LPN course. I am hoping that LPN's will be wanted in the hospitals. As I have 4 kids and there is NO way I can move to either Regina or Saskatoon to obtain a RN schooling...the LPN is the only thing left for me. I hear about the shortages coming this way regarding retirements so I pray my 15 month course will be benificial.

Glad to meet you! As you've probably read in the past postings, there will be a devastating shortage of nurses by 2005. There is just not enough of us - we are a dying breed! Any way in which you can help is going to be greatly appreciated. Don't worry about whether or not you'll be needed. Get your LPN, enjoy the learning, and come join the party! Looking forward to meeting you some day.....

I am a current LPN student in Alberta....9 months to go.....and am planning to relocate to Saskatoon in November to work. I hope the job availability is good there??????? I love the city and can't wait to move....anyone have any info as to where to look for jobs????

Hello MarieClaire,

There is a great demand for nurses in the city and you really have your choice of where you want to work, be it community, acute or long term care. The health region has been converted into a health district which makes one department responsible for hiring staff. There is also a psychiatric center which is run by the Federal Government, and might be of interest if you want to do forensic nursing. Good luck in your studies!:)

I'm a student currently doing my preceptorship in Ontario. Two of my classmates are doing their preceptorships in Regina. If Saskatoon is anything like Regina, I can imagine it is very short-staffed. The contact person who spoke with our instructor said that Saskatchewan does not graduate anywhere near the number of nurses that they need and with lower wages, many grads head for "greener pastures". My two classmates were offered jobs before they had even left Ontario to begin their preceptorships, and the hospital contact phoned and asked our instructor if there were anymore students in our class who would like to go out to Regina. They are being wonderful and nice as pie, just hope that this continues to be the case after my classmates graduate and begin working there (IF they decide to do so).

All of this sounds so funny to me. I will be done my BSN in 6 months and I have received a 6000 dollar bursary to stay in Sask for four years. The bad thing about it is that although there are loads of hours to be had, there seems to be nothing but casual postings. With this wonderful Bursary I have received, the conditions are that I must have a full-time job for a return in service that ends in 4 years. With a casual postion who knows how long I will have to stay to work it off. Another problem is job security. With casual postions you have none. They are closing beds in our hospitals here in Regina quicker than you can blink an eye, but yet we are on a code burgundy most of the time. I am loyal to where I got my education but why should I be when the government and their tactics aren't loyal to us.

I am from Saskatchewan. I absolutely love Saskatchewan. I live in Saskatoon and I am in my fourth year on nursing. The people are very friendly and the nurses in the hospitals are more than willing to help you out. The atmosphere and the beauty of Saskatoon is commendable. I have fallen in love with Saskatoon. I am moving out east possibly not because I don't love Saskatoon bc of personal reasons (love, lol). Ya, anyhow, I highly recommend Saskatoon. I love it and will envy you!!!!!

I went to school in S'toon and just moved far away, after working in Regina. In the opinions of myself and some colleagues, Sask does not offer good working conditions. I will never go back.
