San Luis Obispo county-how is the pay?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping there are nurses out there who can help me. I am a nursing student right now in Las Vegas, NV and I will graduate in December. I would love to move to the San Luis Obispo area (SLO, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, etc.) and I'm wondering what to expect as far as getting a job? How difficult is it for a new grad? What is the starting pay range? Are there any hospitals that anyone can reccommend? I've worked for CHW here for the past 3 years and I've heard they have at least one hosptial in the area, but haven't really looked into it that deeply yet. I'd love to hear from anyone with experience in the central coast area! Thank you so much.

Don't know but I have a pen pal in the men's prison there.

I live in San Luis Obispo and I'll be graduating in June. The starting nurses salary here is about 23.75 an hour. It's okay, but you have to remember that the house of prices here are outragous. We own a 1400 square foot condo in SLO and it's worth 475,000. Grover Beach has a little bit cheaper housing (as long as your house isn't on the beach)....Pismo is very expensive, Arroyo Grande is slightly lower than SLO, but not much. There is a hospital in AG (called Arroyo Grande hospital, go figure ;) ). In San Luis there is Sierra Vista and French hospital and in Santa Maria (south of AG), there is Marian hospital. I didn't like Arroyo Grande hospital very much, either as a patient or as a nursing student....but some people really like it.

I believe all of the hospitals have shift differentials, and all of the local hospitals are 12 hours shifts.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the good info! Can I ask where you're going to school because I thought Cal Poly didn't have a Nursing program? I'm just curious because I will graduate with an Associate's Degree, but I'd like to get my Bachelors and I wasn't sure if that was an option there. If I stay here in Vegas, I will start somewhere between 22.50 and 24.75 and our houses haven't reached CA prices yet even though they're going up fast! But, still, how much is the chance to live in that beautiful area worth? I guess that's what it comes down to. That's why I was curious to see if the pay more or less matched the cost of living, but it doesn't sound like it. Thanks for the reply.

I go to Cuesta college...it's an Associates program. Not sure where you'd go for a BN. It is paradise here and that's why people pay the big prices.

Good luck,

Isn't Sierra Vista part of the Tenet group? I would have thought that the pay would have been much better then what you have quoted. This area is very expensive and I know S. Cal is paying better.

Do you know if they are offering a sign on bonus and relocation?
