Currently a Semester 4 student at SJSU-- please contact me if anyone has any questions about the school/program!

I will say the application was long enough ago for me that I don't remember all the details but I can try answering questions about that too. Good luck ya'll!

Edit: Oh! My stats for the application were a 3.97 GPA (4.0 big 😎 and 93% on TEAS

Hi there. Im super late but I'd like to take you up on this offer as I have many questions!

I got accepted into both SJSU and SFSU and I'm so torn on which to choose. I live in Santa Cruz so could commute if I chose SJ to save money on rent but I was really excited about SF( which was my top choice). My questions are mainly subjective but I'm looking for advice. Does location even matter that much in nursing school? As In ill be so darn busy to be enjoying my environment anyway. Is the 1 hour commute doable or should I consider moving closer anyway? How highly would you regard the program at SJSU and was it your first choice? Is the extra half a year a big deal or did you find that it didn't affect you much? Thanks so much in advice for anything you share.

Hi I am waiting from SFSU too. I am stuck in between SFSU and SJSU.

Which did you end up choosing? Any regrets?  I am in the same predicament now and not sure which to chose .

Hey everyone,

congratulations to all that have been accepted and waitlisted! Getting into California nursing programs is no joke, and I think we should all be proud!
I was accepted into SJSU and SFSU!!  I've been trying to do as much research online as I could, and asked friends, to find out about the pros/cons between SF and SJ. I'm leaning SJSU. I know it's an extra semester, and as much as I know I'll be ready to be done with school, for me, I think SJ is the way to go.

Please help me out with the information you found? I am in the same boat one year later. Which program did you end up choosing? Any regrets? For the the preceptorship seems like a deal breaker as well as being closer to me though I literally dreamed of getting into SFSU for so long that letting go of the idea is breaking my heart a bit.

Hi! These are def good questions and a lot to consider— I commuted to SJSU from Oakland for the majority of the time and then from SF for my last two semesters. The commute (from Oakland especially was TOUGH). While everyone else was home recuperating from a long day of classes and getting started on projects or socializing with other students, I was still in traffic. If making connections with peers in school is important to you, definitely consider this. There were a handful of classmates who commuted from Santa Cruz so it's certainly doable.

Throughout the program I worked part-time on the weekends in order to afford rent and I envied my classmates who lived with their parents because they were able to take part-time work as CNAs while in school. (FYI, we are qualified to get CNA license after two semesters of nursing school). This was beneficial to them because many of those with healthcare experience had no trouble getting jobs and sometimes even favored by the employer they were already a CNA with.

There is definitely a benefit to going to school in the area where you intend to work afterwards— I had built many connections and networked all around the South Bay, but now I'm trying to work in SF and I don't know anyone here. Specifically your senior preceptorship is usually the best bet for getting in with a unit when you graduate. Am I doomed? No, I'm applying to all the big residencies in and around SF, stretching down to Stanford and El Camino Health as well as all of the random new grad positions for hospitals near me as they pop up. I don't think having gone to SFSU would have changed a whole lot for me in that sense.

As for SJSU vs SFSU, I can't really speak to SFSU specifically since I didn't go there for nursing (I actually did though for my BA in psychology). SJSU is a beautiful campus with lots of amenities and I did like the program all things considered— but from what I hear, nursing schools in general can be very frustrating from difficulties with scheduling clinicals to teachers who don't equip us well. Overall I liked all my profs well enough except for like one or two and they have since retired.

when it comes to saving money— I can't stress enough how much you should utilize a cheap living situation. Nursing school is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than just tuition. We had to pay so many extra things from background checks, online learning materials that you could not rent or get for cheap elsewhere that cost hundreds per year, uniforms, stethoscopes, supplemental studying resources like UWorld (not required but highly recommend), gas/parking (there is free parking by SJSU if you're not willing to walk 10-20min). Plus just loooooong days of classes, you're gonna end up buying lunch in student center bc it's the one bit of joy you might have for the day haha.
OH and btw, there are *some* clinical sites in Santa Cruz and I know some of the Santa Cruz students I know got their senior preceptorships at Dominican.

Hopefully I answered your questions. let me know if you have any others— feel free to DM me too.
