Urgent! CSU Systemwide Impaction and SJSU

On Thursday, November 20, 2008, in response to the state's worsening fiscal crisis, the California State University system declared systemwide impaction for the first time in its history.

San José State University must immediately develop and implement a plan to reduce enrollment. Several measures are currently in effect:

  • SJSU stopped accepting Spring 2009 undergraduate applications on August 31.
  • The November 30, 2008 deadline for Fall 2009 undergraduate applications has been posted since mid-summer and has been widely publicized throughout California.

However, it is likely that additional measures will be implemented.

Fall 2009 First Time Freshman Applicants

  • All Santa Clara County applicants will be admitted, provided they apply by 11:59 PST on November 30,2008, comply with all posted deadlines and meet CSU eligibility requirements.
  • Frosh applicants from outside of Santa Clara County are urged to apply to their local CSU campus and to have a back-up plan. SJSU expects to offer admission to many frosh who reside outside of Santa Clara County; however, we cannot guarantee that we will offer admission to all qualified students. Your patience is requested while SJSU assesses the number of applications we receive during the filing period and the qualifications of all applicants.
  • Notification of admission is likely to be delayed this year. Your patience is requested.
  • SJSU communicates by messages posted on student's MySJSU accounts. It is the student's responsibility to monitor this account and to check frequently for messages and 'to-do' items.

Fall 2009 Lower Division Transfers

  • SJSU will no longer accept applications from lower division transfers, regardless of major. Students who applied earlier in the cycle will have their applications withdrawn and application fee refunded.
  • Transfers must be fully eligible as upper division transfers to be considered for admission.
  • Prospective lower division transfers are urged to contact CSU, East Bay, as space is available at our sister campus.

Fall 2009 Upper Division Transfers

  • All Santa Clara County applicants will be admitted, provided they apply by 11:59 PST on November 30,2008, comply with all posted deadlines and meet CSU eligibility requirements.
  • Though we cannot guarantee that we will offer admission to all qualified students, upper division transfer demand is not as great as that for frosh. Your patience is requested while SJSU assesses the number of transfer applications we receive during the filing period and the qualifications of all applicants.
  • At present, there is no change to the posted requirements. Students must be fully eligible as upper division transfers to be considered for admission.
  • Notification of admission is likely to be delayed this year. Your patience is requested.
  • SJSU communicates by messages posted on student's MySJSU accounts. It is the student's responsibility to monitor this account and to check frequently for messages and 'to-do' items.

Fall 2009 Post-baccalaureate Applicants

  • SJSU will no longer accept applications from post-baccalaureate (second baccalaureate) applicants, regardless of major.
  • Students who applied earlier in the cycle will have their applications withdrawn and application fee refunded.
  • Prospective post-baccalaureate applicants are urged to contact CSU, East Bay, as space is available at our sister campus.

Graduate Applicants

  • Do not delay. Apply at www.csumentor.edu.
  • Once capacities are reached, program deadlines are subject to change at any time.
  • Instructions and deadlines are posted at www.sjsu.edu/gape.

Communication to Applicants

After the initial filing period, applicants will be notified about the implementation of impaction at SJSU. The measures SJSU will take are dependent upon the number and quality of applications received before the November 30 deadline. Again, your patience is requested while we make certain that every applicant has an opportunity to be considered.

Unless things have changed a lot in one year, the nursing program will have plenty of applicants from current SJSU students.

I do not feel that it will change things drastically but because it will make priority for Santa Clara County Residents and also put a limit to applying no more than 3 different time (beginning April 2009), as a San Jose resident, I feel more confident about my future application.

Best of luck to you:)! Did you make the November 30th deadline:up:?

When I went there a couple of decades ago they were wrestling with the impact status of the nursing school. While I would not qualify to get in now, I can see that it is a fair way to limit admissions. I do believe however, that they should address poor performers. Getting rid of those on academic probation for too long a period, or too many times, would also free up some seats for deserving students. I saw where another of the campuses is considering getting rid of academic low achievers as a way of cutting down on enrollment. I also like that they are giving preference to residents of SC County. Only fair. Good luck to all who are planning on attending SJSU.

yeah, I believe that would work as well. I am a little concerned about SJSU's passing rates dropping. I read some where that they may be making some changes to help more students pass the NCLEX. I hope when I do get accepted and start it's curriculum is relative to NCLEX preparation.
