Dear Allnursing Members,

I am in the process of applying to nursing schools for either an Entry Level Master's program or ABSN. San Francisco State University is on my list because it is close to me, a public school, and has a master's program. My goal is to become a nurse working in direct care. Whether I go directly into a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner position or work my way up depends on the school I get into.

San Francisco State offers three specialty options: CNS (Adult, Pediatric, Women's Health, and maybe Psychiatric), Nursing Administration, and Public/Community Health Nurse. I've heard that even if SF State offers the psych CNS specialty, I would never get to use my degree because it is being "phased out" in California. My question is, in your opinion, which of these specialties (if any) would be the best route to achieve my goal?

I don't want to spend my days pushing paper or supervising other nurses. Any advice is much appreciated. I need to make my decision soon. Thanks!

P.S.: I should add some info about what my experience in healthcare is. I've worked as a Medical Assistant for > 5 years in primary care and urgent care. I enjoy the outpatient environment, but have never worked in an inpatient facility so I don't have an opinion on it. As someone who has suffered from psychological problems, I know something about the field. My MA experience also showed me that we can do a lot better taking care of psych patients. That's where my passion is and why.

I called the college and this time spoke to an admissions officer. They said that they do in fact offer the psych CNS.
