Hi everyone! I'm starting this discussion for those who applied for SMU ABSN program for the Fall 2024 cohort! I was curious if anyone has received updates/email yet. I personally applied to the Sacramento program. Good luck everyone! I
Hi everyone,
I'm in the Spring 2024 cohort at the Sac campus. I just wanted to give you guys a few tips I and others wish we had had while waiting to hear back about getting accepted.
Pretty much your health history needs to be up to date. If you are missing any vaccines, now is the time to get those done. The only vaccine you can decline is the flu vaccine; everything else is required. The covid vaccine (including current booster) was still a requirement for my cohort. This is a necessity for clinicals, though I know some hospitals are starting to drop the covid requirement for employees.
You'll need a current TB test. It's not just one test, but two (as in, a placement and a reading done twice). I'd recommend getting the blood test (Quantiferon) to save yourself some time with multiple trips.
Schedule an appointment to see your doctor for physical. You have to be medically cleared to enter this program and it has to be a very recent physical. I know for some people it can take some time getting an appointment, so trying to schedule something now for July-August. You'll be provided with a SMU-specific form for the doctor to fill out, so wait to be accepted before going.
Even if you don't get into the program, these things are still good to have current and it won't be a waste to get them done.
Other requirements include a background check and drug screening. You'll be provided information for these.
If you are planning on taking out a personal loan to pay for school, start talking to lenders now just to get an idea of rates and such. Factor out how much you'll need, if necessary, beyond the cost of tuition. For some people this process took some time because they kept getting rejected by lenders.
If I think of anything else, I'll post it!
(And if you happened to be at the nursing seminar in Sac this past Friday, I was one of the volunteers there!)

The lady at the school says the Sac program starts Aug 26th, but I agree with you that it's not a lot of time.
