Samuel Merritt- ELMSN Spring 2009 (Sacramento Campus)

Anyone else apply and also anxiously waiting???

Actually I guess I can't pm until I have more posts, but feel free to message me your email and I'll get back to you :)

Hi everyone,

I understand that this forum is rather old, however, I just sent in my application for the ELMSN programs at SM for Spring 2011, and I am looking for any advice on the program. Did you use NursingCAS? I think my class would be the first to use it for SM, and I am curious if this program will change the deadlines I should expect to have heard from the school or not. Also, if anyone can offer any advice on your personal stats that earned your acceptance.

I unfortunately was told by an RN at UCD that UCD does not hire students from SM, because their clinical training is horrible. This made me pretty upset, being as I am looking forward to attending this school if I am accepted. Does anyone have any input on the clinical training thus far? I have a difficult time believing what I heard. Thanks!

Megan,

First off, good luck in the application process! I hope to see you next year on campus. We did not use NursingCAS when we applied - in fact I had to google it haha. If you want to know my stats that got me accepted then give me a private message and I'll be happy to tell you.

What you heard about UCD is not true. Our clinical rotations are not "horrible" and in fact we precept longer than anyone. There are a few things that we are not allowed to do as students, but at UCDMC no student is allowed to do those same things regardless of what school they are from. With any school though you must be in charge of your own clinical training - jump in and practice your skills or learn new ones when you can. And about not being hired - the job market is just not very good right now, but a classmate was hired at UCD recently. Their reason for not hiring students before had nothing to do with training, but I can elaborate in private.

SephyWiggin - Thanks so much for your prompt response! I unfortunately JUST created an account to this site, so I cannot send personal messages yet. Thank you also for clarifying this issue with clinicals. I agree with you 100%, that the student is responsible for learning, so my impression was that a few bad apples ruined it for everyone. After reading through this thread and a few others I feel like my grades are not quite up to par with the competition. I believe my strongest quality is the three years experience I have as a medical assistant (non-licensed) at a community mental health clinic, so hopefully that will help compensate. I don't know if it makes a difference that I have worked full time while going to school nearly full-time as well. This makes me a little uneasy; however, I know eventually I'll get where I need to be. If you are able to send me a personal message without advertising your stats on the web, I would appreciate it!

Thank you again, and I too hope to see you on campus next year! Lol. I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)
