Nursing Students Post Graduate

Anyone out there applying for this program? Looking for some friends to share the stress of the waiting game with!

Hello nursingimomma, congrats on the interview!! Mine is at 200 and they said will end at 400 So does this mean there are two groups going that day I would assume??? Good luck everyone and congrats to those that are done with the process!

Ah thanks for the response Erik! I feel like a big part of my anxiety has been from a lot of the gossip that floats around allnurses and my classmates. In anycase, I will still submit my early acceptance fee tomorrow (lol I know I'm cutting it close) and mull over the decision more. If I end up going to SMU's sac campus I'll be grateful to have you as a classmate! :yeah:

Hey everybody: I think the folks on this website might be reading our exchange re: entry level masters APN programs! Check this out: https://allnurses.com/nursing-blogs/entry-into-practice-419939.html. Here's my question: If folks going into APN via an ELMS program need at least 2 years of experience as a nurse before elevating to advanced practice, then what happens to people who graduate from PA school with equally little (or no) prior health care experience? At least newbie MSNs can go get experience as a nurse prior to getting that NP job. What does a new PA do??

(By the way, I do realize that this would only affect the minority of PAs because many PA schools require several thousand hours of health care experience as a prerequisite; nevertheless exceptions are made for candidates with other stellar qualifications--grades, dramatic community service).

That's great! I, too, have figured that if I get any wild ideas about a better way to go before (or maybe even after) January, that I can always jump ship. $350 isn't chicken feed, but giving it up to opt for a cheaper/better alternative isn't that high a price to pay either. If you get any wild ideas of your own, please share! Otherwise, I look forward to shouldering the SMU burden with you and the rest of the group come January! Erik

This thread has a various amount of opinions on the direct entry NPs as well:

https://allnurses.com/nurse-practitioners-np/becoming-np-little-193372.html

It seems that the opinion is pretty much split. I just hope that hiring managers don't view direct entry as negatively as some of the people in that thread have posted.

WillKMak, for some reason it will not let me send you an email through this thing. But Yes FNP next Tuesday. I am really excited, Ive always said "if I can just get to the interview!!" So I am looking foward to it!! I am from Modesto.... so not too far from sac!

Here's one on ABSN Programs as well!

It's interesting that the post seems to regard ABSN programs much more favorably than the ELMS program is treated by the other post!

Yea it seems that there's a some people out there who believe NPs should serve as RNs first to gain the basics of nursing. Although I have read and heard that the two roles are different so having experience as an RN is beneficial but lack of it should not hurt us (skillwise, but probably might hurt us rom a hiring managers view).

By the way, another point I forgot to mention is that, when I job-shadowed some of the FNPs at UCD, I learned that two of the Trauma FNPs came from SMU's ELMS program. So, at least they found a job. Now I'm not sure how their much more seasoned colleagues really view them, but none of the non-ELMS FNPs I talked to discouraged me from going this route.

Ah I see, demonstrate that enthusiasm during the interview! Modesto! that's an 1H30 min away! I noticed that modesto is about the same distance from Oakland. what made you choose SMU sac over SMU oakland?

OH WOW THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR! :yeah: lol I could care less than how my older collegues view my credentials cause if I can get the chance, I'm sure I could more than prove my competence to them.

Thank you.. I will take that advice. I would certainly move to Sac. My Aunt and Uncle live there, so I would possibly live with them or find my own place, if I get in. My grades were not the best, so I did apply to Oakland last semester but did not get in. I applied to the ABSN last semester I should say. I retook a course and I took Micro, which was in progress. SO when I applied this time I had better grades. Thanks for the advice... I am just going to be myself!! That might work :)
