Hi Everyone! I know this is a bit early but I will be applying to SMU for the ABSN program of Summer 2014 (Oakland Campus). I am currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in health science at CSUEB right now and I will be done in the fall. I just wanted to start a discussion on this topic and get to know some people who are applying to the program for summer 2014. Let's get to know each other, share our stats, etc.
Here are my estimated stats that they look at:
Last 60 units GPA: 3.5
Pre req GPA: 3.4
Teas: 83 but I am re taking it in a couple of weeks
Experience: I am a CNA and Med tech currently. I volunteer at John Muir hospital and at American Red Cross.
I hope to hear from some prospective applicants soon!
I know they've taken up to 20 before...but I'm not sure on how common an occurrence that is?I started at #11 for April and I'm still not in yet. For what it's worth, when I asked about my chances at #11 _ said that usually people get in at that number. At the very least they will move your application so you can try to get in in the fall though.
Thanks! Good luck! I heard there are a couple more spots opening, people accepting other offers. fingers crossed!! Please keep me posted if anyone hears anything else or the wait list moves up :)
FYI There is a group on FB for the Oakland Cohort.
Search for Samuel Merritt University - ABSN Oakland - Class of 2015. It's an open group.
Stats for those applying
Last 60 units GPA: 4.0
Science GPA: 4.0
Pre req GPA: 4.0
TEAS math: 93
TEAS reading: 99
TEAS overall: 93
Health care: 2500 hours experience in Emergency Department
Do the best you can in those core sciences. I took the Pharm and Pathophys with SM online - got an A in both, they were pricey but give you an idea of the caliber of the coursework.
Get your healthcare experience.
I took the GRE the week before I took the TEAS - this really helped me with my verbal/reading on TEAS.
Stats for future applicants:
Last 60 units GPA: 3.6
Science GPA: 3.7
Pre-req GPA: 3.7
Teas Math: 99
Teas Reading:92
Healthcare: No paid experience. However, over 500 volunteer hours at The Children's Hospital and Kaiser. Internship at a Non-profit Health Organization working with low-income communities. Lastly, two aboard healthcare internships.
Extra: I did take the 8 unit anatomy and physiology 3 week summer course to review before I submitted my application. It definitely shows you can be successful in an accelerated environment. (Even though that 3 week course was the hardest thing I've ever done lol)
Good luck! :)
