Published

Hi everyone. I wanted to start a discussion about the ABSN Samuel Merritt program for Fall 2023. I have applied to the Sacramento campus and hoping to get accepted. has anyone else applied? or be in the program I would love to hear more about it.

Has anyone heard from SMU regarding ABSN fall cohort? or when we should hear back?

I only heard that my application was received and being reviewed

student from the cohort-
SMU was my top school and I was so excited to have an enriching experience. However, the lack of communication between admin is pitiful. Everything coffeebeans said is accurate. Now for our EXIT HESI, it has been rescheduled because no one wants to proctor us on a Saturday. This date has been set two months in advance, honestly, the only thing I thought SMU could promise for once. We planned our lives around this only for the school to realize no one is available or able to hold this exam. Mind you this is for us to graduate.

You really need a solid foundation before attending SMU. Also, get a therapist. You'll need one. Not to mention you will develop trust issues.

I agree with everything mentioned here, get yourself a therapist before committing here. Things are changing up the night before and they don't care about the students' opinions. Pinning ceremony is supposed to be intimate and held separately for each cohort but SMU is so cheap they decided to combine April, May, and June cohorts into one pinning ceremony to save money and time. April cohort has to wait a whole month after they finish to attend their own pinning. Students had zero say in this. We were told pinning is on Wednesday May 31st at noon. They obviously don't care about everyone else's lives. We asked to use our cohort budget to organize our own pinning ceremony in April but admin said no because we needed to work on their schedules. On the other hand, they spent $150 million dollars on a new campus LOL. They literally don't have enough staff and resources to keep the current programs afloat yet they are still trying to expand and create new programs.

one of our classmates also overheard the faculty at the Oakland campus boast about how much they are getting paid and how little they have to do.

do what you will with this information, I wish you guys all the best. Im just asking you guys to share your experiences honestly if you guys do go here. Tbh I don't expect anything to change, but everyone deserves to know what they are getting themselves into when applying here.

Thanks for your honest take. What a bummer to hear about all of the stressful back and forth you've had to deal with. It doesn't seem right that you have had to go through that given how much you've committed your time and money to the program.

I applied (have not heard a decision) but decided not to attend because the cost is insurmountable. It sounds like I may have regretted SMU...again I'm so sorry you have to put up with the disorganization and stress. I hope it all works out soon and you can leave the negative parts behind you.

Hi everyone,

im new to the chat I applied for the fall 2023 cohort for the Sacramento campus. I am a little nervous based on the reviews I have been seeing and of course the price tag is a little daunting. I also noticed that our deadline was 04/01 but now I'm seeing that they have opened the application till 06/01 so I hope we can hear back sooner than June or at least mid June.

Update on tuition:

SMU plans on increasing the tuition/fees for 2023-2024 by 5.0%. To compare, the SMU finance department stated that SMU has averaged an annual tuition/fee increase of 2.5% per year from 2018 to 2022 (below the national average of 3.5%).

Take SMU's justification for tuition increase with a hefty dose of salt. Using the national average as a base of measure is flawed. SMU continues to charge one of the highest tuition of any ABSN program in the nation despite its claim of slow increase in tuition rates.

Looks like the new tuition for 2023-2024 will be $89,128 for the ABSN program. Just to reiterate, we are paying more than previous students for a program that is currently cutting/gutting programs. You will also be expected to pay additional money for advanced certifications that will be replacing preceptorships in your new senior synthesis program.

Wow I did not notice that. Do you know what that could mean for us?

I'm not too sure I got my preliminary review confirmation email today so I want to assume it won't. I was going to email them but I also don't want to bother them. LOL.

Hello everyone! I also applied for the ABSN Fall 2023 program for Sacramento because I already have a bachelor and don't want to stall any longer. SMU seemed like a good idea due to the time frame, but these reviews are concerning. I did email SMU regarding their application extension and they told me that they try to get back to applicants with a decision in 3 months. I'm not sure if this means 3 months from April or June, but that can be as late as August, which is only a month from the start month. I believe they don't give a lot of time for decision making on our ends either. Honestly, I'm afraid of the financial aspect of this program and I don't know how loans will work yikes. However, I'm also afraid of denying the school and having nothing LOL.

I was watching the application process for Summer 2023.  The application deadline got moved from December to February at that time.  At the time I guessed that they're having issues filling the cohort because of that.  Now the deadline for Fall 2023 gets moved back AND HESI/TEAS are optional now.  Plus I just got called with an offer to move my application from Fall to start in the Summer cohort.
