Salinas Valley Memorial

Published

Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if any of you have heard about Salinas Valley Memorial in California? Is it a good place to work (ie high turnover or poor working environment)? How is Salinas as an area to live it (high crime rate or boring town)? I'm considering taking a peds or nicu position there but I don't know anything about the area or the hospital. Sorry for so many questions!!

Any suggestions/advice/help would be appreciated!!

Thanks!! :nurse:

Dear ShyNurse

I work at SVMH and it is a very safe area. I have moved here from Las Vegas. I am currently staying at the Residence Inn. I, too, was very nervous about moving here, however, I have found it to be a fine place to live. My husband and I have recently bought a home here.

I am the Director of Women and Children's Service at SVMH. There is gang activity in East Salinas, but there is gang activity in every town. Unless you plan on hanging out there you are safe. I have been by myself for almost 3 months and do feel safe.

Please don't post your phone number here. It can be seen by everyone all over the world. Personal info like this should be sent by personal message only. This site is googled around the world.............please try to keep yourself safe...............

Hi Midge!

Thanks for you response! I would definitely be interested in speaking to you about Salinas and SVMH. Can you send me a private message and I will call you? Thanks again! Maybe I'll get a chance to work at SVMH with you! :)

I've got 25+ yrs in peds and peds hem/onc. and was wondering about that hospital . looking to start in July what do you think? would I like it? I'm in fl. now and want to get away from the hurricanes. Any helpful info would be great.

Yup that's the same place. I was turned down for the peds position because I didn't have enough experience but I went down on the 10th of this month and came back to Vancouver yesterday.

I'm not really sure of the hospital...the nicu is going to go through lots of changes and they're all 8 hour shifts right now but the hospital is trying to implement 12 hour shifts.

I'm coming from the city and I find Salinas small but there's a larger shopping mall really close plus there's a huge outlet mall in Gilroy (30 mins away) and Monterey is also 30 mins away in the opposite direction. I absolutely loved the drive from the fisherman's warf through Pebble Beach and Carmel. The weather is also comparable to Vancouver's weather.

Hope that helps! Good luck with your search!

Have you heard of City of Hope? I had an interview there and I had a really good feeling about that hospital. It's in Duarte, CA and it's an oncology hospital. It's about 1 hour away from LA. Check out there website. http://www.coh.org/ and if you want to talk to someone, I can give you a name. I'm actually considering a position there.

Yeah actually I had a recuiter tell me about that city of hope job. It's been about 8 yrs since I did hem/onc kids so don't know about how hard it would be to get back up to speed but I'm willing to try 'cause I sure loved that kind of nursing. So you liked the hospital and the area? Is it a big busy town? would like to go someplace smaller than LA or Oakland, etc to get my feet wet offers just now coming in for July so hopefully there will be the perfect place for me. Let me know your feelings on any other peds jobs and/or hospitals you've been to.

thanks Margeux

Margeux:

Yes this is the same hospital. Gail Pieper is the Director of Peds. You would like it here. It is nice and beautiful weather. The city is not small at all, pretty good size actually. about 2 hrs. from San Francisco and 5 hrs from LA. It is a good place to work.
