How does your company handle salary compensation...

I worked 43 hours last week, and that was with taking Monday off. 8 hours was

deducted from my paid time off, and 32 hours were paid by the company to total

40 hours.

I've been full time at hospitals, granted, not salary, and I wasn't docked like this.

Any input is greatly appreciated. I like the folks I work with, and I have autonomy, but

if it's not like this for ALL employees, it just isn't right.

Most places I have worked would have paid you 35 hours plus our 8 hrs PTO. You wouldn't get over-time because of the PTO hours. This is if you are paid hourly.

If you are salaried, you only get a total of 40 hours, no matter how many hours you put in.

I'd check with the bookkeeper. I've had mistaktes on my check before, but it was just an error and was fixed on my next check. I agreee with Sharlynn, you SHOULD have been paid 35 hours + 8 hours PTO (no overtime).

Some of this depends on the state you live in (Georgia I presume) and some of depends on your "status" --are you salaried-- are you salaried exempt? What is your company policy? Some companies don't care how many hours you work in a day, just how many days of the week you work. Some companies insist on keeping track of time in this manner as it allows them to see where their "labor costs" are going. Lets say that you were sick on Monday, but worked 11 hours each on days Tuesday through Friday--the company would categorize your missed day into a sick day or PTO or CAL time so they can justify that the PRN nurse they had to bring in to work for you on your day off was really needed (if they did bring in a nurse) The way the guys in the corporate office would know that a PRN nurse was needed for 8 hours was if they saw that they also paid a nurse 8 hours of sick time or PTO.

Salaried exempt employees have to be paid for 40 hours a week, but if you miss any time it is up to company policy to determine how to handle it--they are within their legal right to pull the time out of your sick bank, and you may be miffed by it, but most of the rules are in place to make things fair for everyone. Generally, if our staff knows they will be missing a specific day, they can submit a plan to flex that time into the other days of the week by adding hours to each day or seeing their patients on Sat or Sun if the patients are okay with the changes--they also have to have another case manager agree to handle any of their patient calls or emergencies that may arise that day.
