Salary Offer/Job Hunting

Published

I am looking for other employment opportunities as I have not been happy with my current situation for a while now. I live in Virginia - not NOVA, and I am currently a federally employed nurse. I applied for a job in an ICU environment and received a job offer of 22.86/hr. I currently make 25.53. Given that I work a 40 work week (hate it) and this is a 36 hour position, this equates to close to a 10,000 a year decrease in salary. I want the 36 hour work week, so I was expecting to take that hit, but not much more. I declined, but I wonder if I am living in la-la land. I was told that since I am an ADN and have 2 years of experience, this accounted for the low salary offer. Well, that's what I have now at my current employer. Also, I moved up here from Florida, where the cost of living is considerably lower, and that is the same thing I made as a new grad.

The HR person sounded highly offended that I didn't take the offer, citing the low salary and went into a rant about my experience and education. It was kind of insulting. I sent the nurse manager an email thanking her for her time and consideration, and that it saddened me that I couldnt take the job, and I realized there was not much she could do about the offer.
