My wife and I are looking to relocate to Sacramento and just wondering how the market is. Are nurses able to get their 3 12hr shifts each week? Is there availability for OT and extra shifts? Can one pick up PRN work on the side? Or is the job market soft with the recent healthcare changes? I am looking to work a lot and pay off some school debt. Just want to see if the work is there before fully committing.

The CA job market for nurses is the worst in the country. However, if your wife has experience and is not a new grad, she will fare better. I would not move til she has a job though

She is not a RN or looking @ getting a job. Are nurse even getting 36 hrs a week there?

Sacramento is not a good market for nurses. Are you a nurse or a CNA? There are only a few main hospital systems: Sutter, UC Davis, Kaiser, and Mercy (Catholic Healthcare West). All of them are very difficult to get into. I would not move without a job offer in hand.

I would not move without an offer. How is the market not good for nurse? Please expound. From what I see I could make around $50 hr. That is more than $20 more an hour than here in Phx. To rent a house is similar to the what I am paying here. Are nurses not getting their hours? Like I said I would not move without a job. So if I by chance got a job there would I have work? Thank you for your help.

I think you are misunderstanding the comments and replies you are getting.

The job market is not good for nurses without experience or specialty experience. Many experienced nurses are finding it incredibly hard to find a job in California, especially Northern California.

The work environment for nurses is great if you can find a job. The pay and staffing (most of the tjme) is great. I came from the east coast and it is night and day, both in terms of staffing and pay.

If you are hired full time you will most likely get your 36 a week, however a lot of hospitals, especially UC have started to hire more per diem due to the cost of benefits / pension.

You're asking an odd question, if you get a job, then yes you would work. Are you wondering if you will be cancelled all the time? That will depend on the hospital, there isn't a blanket statement that I can make that says "no you will never be cancelled".

Why not just apply and ask HR or the manager when you interview.
