Sac State Fall 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am about to send in my application to CSU Sacramento for Fall 13 and was wondering if there are any other people in the same predicament. Would love love to hear your experiences as well.

The insight is definitely appreciated! People speak so highly of Sac State's nursing program. It makes me even more eager to be a part of it, if that's possible!

ElliotPB,

"Could you provide some information about housing and where most students choose to live?"

- Students do commute from areas such as Roseville/Rocklin, Folsom, and Elk Grove and do just fine. It does add a little time to your day and if you are traveling during peak traffic is can add up to an additional half hour/hour.

- There are a lot of students that came from places like LA, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, and SF and I have found that most of them choose to love close to campus in an apartment or they find roommates and rent a house. It is easier to just learn the area around the school than have to learn a new city and the area around the school. If you have a choice I would stay close to school because it is close to a lot of hospitals too. Keep in mind too, that some clinicals are as far away as Davis and Woodland. You may be required to drive to these places for some of your rotations in mental health and/or community nursing.

- As far as the roommate thing. Be careful who you choose to live with. The last thing you need is added stress and frustration to nursing school.

Does anyone know if sac state is offering pharmacology this summer? I can't find it in the course catalog. I don't know what to search under for it.

When I took Pharm in my first semester of nursing (2 semesters ago) it was NURS 14, and it looks like it's offered in fall, not summer. But the class is totally manageable to take during first semester if need be!

Michelle_13:

There is no pharmacology class this summer at CSUS. Like vickymarie said, It is very manageable to take it 1st semester and I would actually recommend to everyone to take it during the first semester. If you take it before you start nursing school then you really don't learn as much. It is all online/video except for the final and there is 100 pts extra credit out of 1000 pt class. Also, the final is open book/notes/internet.

I'd have to agree with vintage swagger. I am in pharm right now and because of the way it is set up, it is somewhat easy to do well without really trying. For that reason I feel like I'm not really paying it as much attention as I would if I was taking it while in the program. And I feel that I won't even remember what I learned by the time I start. For all of those who are in the program, how much of that stuff from pharm do we really need to have memorized?

Nurseinthemaking20:

You don't really have to memorize any of it before the program. The classes in the program are designed to teach it to you anyway as they discuss the various reasons for administering the particular medication. Also, the school is working on taking it away as a prerequisite and just covering it more throughout the nursing curriculum.

When you start clinicals, you will have to complete med sheets that require you to look up every medication on every patient you care for. This along with professors lecturing on it during class will really help solidify the information. And again, there are thousands of meds and they are always adding more. The most important thing to be able to do is know how to look them up.

Vintage swagger- I'm relieved to hear that!

Anybody else obsessing as much as I am. I keep going to the sac state website and scrutinizing the applicant statistics for the previous semesters, trying to figure out how much the point cut off might increase. 20 more days guys!

Nurseinthemaking20: I definitely am! I'm constantly checking my e-mail for updates. Haha.

Oh, I am definitely obsessing. I have been trying pretty hard to distract myself, and stop checking for updates, but at this point I think it is impossible. At least we are less than a month away from knowing!

I am doing a pre-nursing information session Friday with Terri Tallman (the person who sends out acceptance letters) and I will ask her if she has an idea of when she will be sending them out.

And don't worry, Everyone who is in your position checks multiple times a day! Good luck to you all and I will let you know if I find anything out. :specs::up:

VintageSwagger: Thank you so much! It's nice of you to offer to do that! :)
