?'s about working as a PCA for St. John's Mercy, St. Louis

U.S.A. Missouri

Published

I am interested in applying for entry level job to get my feet wet in the medical field. I'm interested in both nursing and healthcare management. I see several jobs open at St. John's Mercy for Patient Care Associates, but the requirements aren't very clear. It says applicants need to have completed a PCA/PCT class. Does that mean they want applicants to complete a CNA course prior to applying?

Second question: what are the average shift times for day/evening shift and evening/night shifts? I want to make sure the hours will fit with my family before I apply.

Thank you!:heartbeat

They definitely offer benefits, you have to be working a minimum of 16 hours a week for part-time benefits, and I believe 32 or 36 for full-time benefits. All of their benefit information can be found here https://www.stjohnsmercy.org/jobs/benefits.asp

Wow thank you so much, you have been really helpful! Do you work there? DO you know any other hospitals that will train you with little to no experience? Someone said MoBap

You're welcome! I did their PCA training! :) I believe MoBap does something similar. St. Luke's probably does the same thing as well. Most hospitals, I believe, will do an abbreviated training if you have already complete your first semester of nursing school with clinicals.

I havent gotten into nursing school yet, thats my problem, im just hoping they can see that im really motivated to get in the field! im just scared with all the other people out there with experience that i will be overlooked bc of my lack of experience

I just got a call back! I have an interview scheduled! So excited thanks for the help! any one have any advice so i can ace this interview?? :yeah:

I was hired there last November and unfortunatly had to quit a couple months later because of family issues. The first 4 weeks was PCA class which also included hands on training on the floor. It was Monday-Friday, I think 8am-4pm. you get paid for all of it. You then get assigned to the floor you will be working on and do two weeks training with a PCA. Most shifts are 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am but some departments do some eight hour shifts like 7am-3pm. Hope this helps.

angielynn how much did u get paid for training? just wondering so i know if i need to keep my other job during training if i get the job fingers crossed!

Hi, just be ready to answer the standard questions like why do you want to work there, what are your strengths/weaknesses, etc...and you should be fine. I was hired with no experience as were some others in my PCA class so you definitely have a chance. Your first interview is with HR and if you pass that one you interview with the Floor supervisor wherever the openings are, sometimes you even get a choice of what floor you want to interview with. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Im still really nervous, i do OK in interviews, but sometimes i get nervous on the spot. hopefully they can see how much i want the job! how long have u worked there??

No problem, I'm sure you'll do fine! I've only been working there for 4 months but I like it and they have great benefits including tuition reimbursement and lots of vacation time...feel free to send me a message if you have any specific questions.

Do you mind me asking what the starting pay is? I want to work there while I'm in nursing school.

This is prob a dumb question, but how do you send a direct message on here? lol im pretty new to this site. If you don't mind, I would LOVE to pick your brain about some questions i had and just get good general advice about the job, thanks :)

No its not dumb. By my name there should be a mail/mailbox link. Just click on that and it will should send me a private message.
