RV or possibly sailboat?

Published

Hello everyone, One of the many reasons I decided a nursing career is the opportunity for travel. When I finish school I plan on moving to Charleston to gain some much needed experience. I know I could buy a motor home to travel with, but I really enjoy sailing and would love to be able to work from a boat. I realize I could just buy a boat and work at a hospital full time, but that kinda takes the aspect of travelling out of the picture. Or work at a hospital for a year or so, then pick up and find a new hospital for a while. How does that look on a resume? I guess I could roll my 401k over without much hassle. I would appreciate your personal opinion on this, and if you know anyone doing anything similar. Thanks in advance for your input. Brandon

Hey Brandon, just wanted to let you know, I've traveled A LOT doing other jobs, now I've been an RN for 7 mos, going to finish out the year and qualify for travel nursing. I was thinking about getting a boat myself, then travel nursing jobs in California and Alaska would REALLY be exciting, not to mention all of those gorgeous warm places. Get your experience first then the world can be your oyster, remember "The path to success is to take massive, determined action" (quote from anthony Robbins)--best of luck--

Travel-rn, You are living my dream!!!!! Do you have any advice for me. Sailing, travel nursing, etc... I want to do both. Whats the coast of NC like. I hear there are some beautiful cities there. What city are you in?

I haven't visited this site for a few years but it's a rare slow night in the ER and stumbled across this. I've been traveling for 6 years and over the past 3 years have spent a few assignment living aboard my sailboat on the coast of NC. That's where I currently am, having been back here since 1/1/04.

It's an ideal situation for me as I travel alone and can then pocket all my housing subsidy. At times when I've felt the need to move elsewhere, I've either left the boat on the hard (so I could ski in Colorado), or taken the boat to Maine. A sailboat is not a fast way to travel so much planning and preparation are necessary but I love it.

I'm not a nurse yet, but I can tell you NC has a beautiful coast. I've sailied out of Little River just south of NC a lot, and It's a little tricky if you're not local. Bald Head island is pretty nice, and I've prob had my worst rough weather sailing off Cape Hattrerous, although it wasn't to bad.

I believe it'll be a great life. Good luck

I am working towards travel nursing this fall and would like to know more pros/cons on working and travelling in an RV. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You're exactly right, although most peopl call my "massive, determined action" Crazy....lol. The hardest part is taking the first step...after that it's all down hill.

Anyone else sailing the Leukemia cup in Southport, NC May 15 & 16?

I am graduating in May and hope to get into a specialty area and get some good experience under my belt.

Jane

Hey Jane how's everything going with graduation. Got any jobs lined up yet?

Course, if by some strange coincidence you managed to miss the entire Austin Powers run - you might be thinking "What a wacko!"

Just call me "Jane, BSN"! Woo Hoo - that types nice! Thanks for asking - I graduated last Thursday and will sit NCLEX next month hopefully. I have been working part-time as a Nurse Extern in the OR and have just had a verbal offer of a fulltime RN position to start in June. (I am thrilled - love the OR!) Haven't done much sailing of late (boo) boat had an altercation with the dock one stormy night and I have to replace ALL starboard stanchions. While I'm in a fixit mood - I think I'd like to add roller furling too...so many jobs, so little time!

What about you - where are you at with your plans?

Jane

Congrats on the BSN, I only have about....hmmm....4 more years to go...lol.

I just put in my two week notice and everything I own is already in Charleston waiting on me, beach here I come. I can't wait. I start school in August, something else I'm looking forward to. Goods luck on you NCLEX BSN Jane, let me know how it goes.

Sorry to hear about the boat, you know what they say boat stands for, Break Out Another Thousand.

I'm an ADN student slated to graduate in December 2005 and single. The kids are grown and I'm divorced. I rent a rather inexpensive apartment in south Florida and have a couple of kitty cats. Do I want to travel??? Oh yes! When I graduate, I want to do a couple of years somewhere in the deep South; maybe North Florida and then be on my way. The idea of RV living doesn't appeal to me, nor does living aboard. What are my options if I don't want to buy a primary residence?
