Hi all!
I have an interview coming up on Monday for the Rush GEM program, and have been browsing this site for others who may be going through the application and interview process. Have seen a few people mentioning that they have applied, but no threads specifically for those wishing to enter the winter 2012 cohort, so I figured I'd start one!
I'm quite excited to even be considered for an interview here as I thought myself a long shot for the program. I'll be doing my interview via phone as I'm from NY, but hope that I will be able to nail it from afar!
Anyone else out there interviewing or waiting?
Shasta312,
I'm a 28 year old male who made subpar grades during my undergrad years. I think I finished up with a 2.7 cumulative. I studied social work and theology during those 4 years and just coasted through. I took about 2.5 years off and just worked, I basically decided nursing was for me during that time. I got super focused and started my pre-reqs and I've never looked back.
The only advice I can give is that if you're starting out with less than ideal grades keep razor sharp focus and aim for all A's. I probably wouldn't have been considered if I received anything less than than a 4.0 on my pre-reqs.
The other thing is know why you want to be a nurse. If there's anything else just let me know.
@CDunning,
Thank you your honest reply. I was not a focused undergrad either, but then is any 18-year-old?
Did you take the GRE? I am taking it in November and am dreading it more than Organic Chemistry.
I suspect you'll make a spectacular nurse because you really had to work for it and most likely wanted it more than most.
Have a good weekend and enjoy your time at Rush.

Hello All! Congrats to those who made it in!
I am applying for Fall 2012 and had a few questions?
Right now my cuml. gpa is at a 3.35(so i dont need to take the gres) i have all my pre-reqs done. i took them while finishing up my psychology degree at uic. I hold many leadership positions and am as a Rehab Aide at Rush right now. What else can strengthen my application? Do you think I have any chances? Also would it be better if i applied to the winter/summer/fall cohort? which would increase my chances? thank you
Thanks.
To be honest your situation looks far better than mine did and I got in so I wouldn't worry to much about it. I had below a 2.7 cumulative GPA. I took the GRE did fair on it, have a 4.0 in my pre-reqs, and had a really good interview. I apparently showed the admissions staff I wanted it pretty bad. I looks like you have grades under and some experience, I'd say you're in. Just know why you want to go to Rush and be a nurse. Write it down and make sure you know why you want it. I think that helped me.
hope this helps,
you can find me on facebook, Christopher Jay Dunning.
I got accepted into the GEM 2012 program. Im excited! can't wait to meet you Kristina, Cdunning83, and Lexi2011 and the other students who will be on this journey with me towards becoming a registered nurse. Goodluck to the future Rush students who are currently completing all of the prerequisites for the GEM program.
