Rush GEM Summer 2014

Published

Anyone else applying for the Rush GEM Summer 2014 cohort? It's been a long road of prereqs to get here, hasn't it? I, for one, am very excited. And hopeful. Only time will tell.

Drop a line to commiserate, at your convenience. Good luck, all!

Thanks @naysando! I assume you're at Rush now? How do you like the program so far?

Sm09, I am also nervous for the interview! I guess for those students that were deferred from January '14 term, that would mean less spots available to the regular applicant pool? Not sure how that process works!

Naysando, Thank you for the words of encouragement!! Do you plan to continue on to a DNP program?

Does anyone have interview advice?

Hi- yes I am in cohort 11 and can try to answer any questions : )

I do want to go on to a dnp program as most who attend rush do.

You will hear that if you just want to be a nurse, rush is not the place for you. They want you to be better and do more so most students selected have that inner drive to want to go on in school.

The best part- if you get hired as a nurse assistant and work for 1 year they have tuition reimbursement for the dnp program!

Hello all,

I have my interview tomorrow! Wish me luck! Kinda nervous but excited at the same time. Anyone have any feedback if they have already interviewed? I was also accepted recently into DePaul's MENP Program so it's a relief but Rush is definitely my dream school. Anyone heard any pros and cons between the two programs besides the fact that DePaul does not have a facility on campus for clinicals?

I just had my interview today. It was very friendly and relaxed. I also got accepted at DePaul, but Rush is my #1, so I am truly hoping they love me as much as I love them!

Good luck!!!!!!

Hey! naysando If you are wanting to apply for the crna program can you still do the streamlined application your first year. And... How does one become a nurse assistant??? :) thanks

Hi I'm not sure about the crna program - sorry

And the NA positions pop up on the "jobs at rush" website. It's very very competitive so everyone in my cohort has been diving on the smallest crumb of a spot. Keep your eyes open and network as much as possible during your clinical time- get to know the unit directors they are the ones that will be hiring you!

If your grades are extremely, extremely competitive, Rush allows you to apply and may accept you to their NP program when you're fresh out of GEM, but most clinical instructors strongly recommend working at least one year as a staff nurse before you go and apply. There was one guy in the program a cohort or two ahead of us who got into the FNP program right after GEM, but he had nearly a straight 4.0 GPA and glowing recommendations. And a 4.0 at Rush...isn't easy. :)

To go CRNA, you must have at least one (preferably two) years of ICU experience as a staff nurse before you apply. And typically to get a job on an ICU unit, you need a year of med-surg nursing experience first (although like NP, an ICU may accept you right out of school if you have competitive grades and strong recommendations.)

Hi Pd31, did you ask the admissions office for a specific date and receive March 5 as a response?
