I am coming from a hospital which only allows running blood by gravity. Is there evidence based practice out there which clearly states it is best practice to either run it by pump or gravity? I would love to find evidence which supports the use of either a pump or gravity. Personally, I hated having to run blood via gravity especially when pumps were available.
I believe the theory is that the mechanisms of the infusion pump can cause lysis of the red blood cells. Clearly, though, blood transfusions given via pump are effective. I think you'll find evidence that supports both.
