I rarely call off, EVER. Especially since I'm PRN but I woke up with a splitting migraine this morning that felt like a chicken was hatching from my head. I didn't know if Excedrine would work or if I would have to take something stronger. At this point I could barely walk without being in tears, so I called in. So when I did, oh boy, the on call scheduler was so rude. It's not like I *knew* I was going to have a migraine. So she *said* she couldn't get ahold of anyone to cover the shift. Of course not, it's five o'clock in the morning. But we worked out a deal, I would go in at 12 (the original shift was from 0700-1615).
Thenn she texted me back asking me to work later. I said ok, what time? She asked me to work 1100-1700. Ugh. What she DOESN'T know is when she called me to work Thursday & Friday I had to reschedule a visit - MULTIPLE - times because I chose to take this job over the visit. So now she's ****** at me, I told the company with the visit when I would go but now it's all screwed up because I get out later. UGH!

There is no reason to be obnoxious to a nurse. Also, you being "allowed" to call out is irrespective of whether or not they find a replacement. All families sign a legally binding agreement that the parent/caretaker is legally responsible for the child's care and that replacement nurses are not guaranteed.

I barely work as it is. This has been the only time I called off, I could barely walk straight & the family lives over an hour away from me. Well I was going to go & work 1000-1600. So I got up, got ready & was 30 minutes away when I got a text saying that the family was going out of town & I was no longer needed for today OR tomorrow. :-|

Health comes first...when I have a sudden migraine or an exacerbation from another chronic health problem; I need to pass GO and get to an ER for fluids, and toradol; migraines, toradol, zofran, and caffeine. Usually by the time I have a migraine that wakes me up in the morning, I'm vomiting by the time I get to the ER, in triage.
Looking forward, just say you have a health emergency and you wont be coming in. That usually cuts down on the issues; at least for me.
I also have had migraines since I was a child and they are no joke. If you were me, that woman better hope that she never calls out sick because I would make her feel just as guilty as she made me feel.
Thank you both! She made me feel terrible. I can function on no sleep, sick, close to anything. But migraines kill. She must be lucky & not suffer from them & think "oh she just has a headache". There have been times where nothing worked to relieve the pain & I almost went to the ER. At the last place I worked it wasn't this difficult to call off & I didn't feel guilty. Sheesh.
