Hey there Ladies and Gents,

Just wondering if anyone out there is in the Royal Naval Reserve. I have been seriously considering joining, but would like to get some idea of what the requirements are. I spoke to a woman about the TA at a career fair in London some time ago and she was quite keen about my chances with them, but I would much prefer to join the Navy, unfortunately there wasn't anyone from the Navy there to speak to. I contacted the London branch of the reserve but they just sent me a few pamphlets with very general information about the entire reserve, not just the nursing section. I work in Haematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant, almost as far away from any trauma nursing you could get and don't think my knowledge would really apply. Also how do they work the hours you go. I know it is like 19 days a year with a two week boot camp, but do you have to go every week as well? I should just get off my backside and call, but the info that they give will of course be quite biased. Would like to chat to someone who isn't employed by them to see if it is actually for me.

Cheers,

Pete

How about getting in touch with a local unit and ask if you can make an informal visit and chat to people and have a look round. I did the TA for over 10 yrs and found it great fun and although they like you to do a lot of weekends generally as long as you did so many plus the 2 week camp things were ok

Hi Pete. 30 years ago, the RNR was based in HMS Claverhouse, a building on Granton Square. They also had a MFV, (Motor Fishing Vessel) and crewed the HMS Killiecrankie (a minesweeper) They wouldn't let me join up!
