Roll Call Hillsborough community college Spring 2012 Nursing

Published

I havent found any threads on the Spring 2012 Nursing program, soo i figured id start one! I have already recieved an Email saying everything has been recieved, just waiting on my letter to see if I was accepted! Does anyone know when theyll be sent out? Has anyone recieved that email yet? :redpinkhe

:( i was hoping to hear that someone got into dm nights and weekends with a 3.52 its my only option and im panicking a bit..

Well depending on what your low grades are in, you might be able to raise it. For instance if your low grade is a D or lower you can retake. If your low grade is in Math for Liberal Arts, you can take College Algebra and they will take the College Algebra grade instead. Hmm. All I can think of though. There were a lot of people this semester who needed Nights and Weekends because of work schedules and didn't get it. They then had to either talk to work, or find a different job. It really sucks. Now, it is not guaranteed that you won't get it with a 3.52, you very well could, BUT now that you know, you have lots of time to hope that something changes with your circumstances (which could happen, anything can happen in a year...at one point in time I needed Nights and Weekends too because of my job, so NW was the plan...then, while I was waiting for my acceptance letter, I was laid off, my schedule was free and clear lol, so now I'm in Afternoons, remember: anything can happen). You also have a lot of time to prepare a backup plan. I don't know your specific situation, but at least you have a bit of forewarning to try and come up with something else just in case. Many of your fellow applicants will need NW and get something else, but they won't have had a year to prepare. Good luck to you!

Yeah I wish that were the case but my low gpa is just from one too many Bs.. thank you very much for your help and insight. I hope things change for the better I'm sorry your blessing came from being laid off. I have a two year old and can't afford daycare so I don't work his dad watches him at night once he gets home from work and hopefully he doesn't get laid off bc he's our only income he works for the city tho. I just don't see how things are going to work out if I can't get a nigght spot. Oh well you're right I have time..

How do you guys think you did on your calculations test?

I'm interested to hear how the other classes fared. DM n/w.....uck.

Hi a_pattee,

I did pretty well on my med calc test... I got an A on it!!! All of our class passed it!!! (No one failed it)... The teacher told us that this was the first time since she has been teaching that the whole class has passed that exam... I'm quite sure you did great!!

here is the info i received about the wings program:

i am currently taking applications for wings assistance but only for the spring waiting list. your acceptance would be determined by if you are getting pell grant from financial aid and i already know you are in a technical program. i am currently at capacity so depending on how many students graduate or drop out will determine who i can accept for spring 2012. assistance is available by textbook vouchers, tuition vouchers and childcare assistance.

so, it seems simple enough, fill out and turn in the app on the website and then hope that enough people graduate.

orientation almost here! squeeeeeeee! going to tape a sign to my back that says rnntrainng :-p can't wait to see you all in person!

for those of you assigned to dm campus, what, if anything, have you heard about choosing clinical locations? i know the locations are st.josephs, university community (now florida hospital) and tampa general. i've been told my someone who just graduated from the program in may to "stay away from uch, tampa general is good..but a biotch to travel to as we have to park somewhere downtown and then take a tram or something ( i don't remember her specific words), and st.josephs is the the all around best" but here are my thoughts, let me know if this makes sense...

1. uch-i'm not sure why i've been told to stay away from it..but it seems to me that as it is a small hospital, the clinicals might be a bit easier and not as varied? so, therefore you might not learn as much as you would somewhere else...but, your day might not be as difficult and stressful as a major trauma center like tgh.

which brings me to #2. tgh. tgh is essentially the opposite of uch, large and intense. because it is a major trauma center, i would expect that we would see everything here, which can only be good for us as it might teach us a lot more than just the basics. seems that doing clinicals at tgh would be like a trial by fire...if we can handle tgh, we can handle anything. however, this also means that there is the possibility that we couldnt' handle it...at least in my way of thinking. what if we get there and it is overwhelming, what if slow and steady happens to be more your pace than intense and chock full of things that we have never experienced before..such as gunshot wounds, tgh specialized in gunshot wounds, so i am pretty sure that at some point in time we would come across it...and that is a bit scary in my book (cool...but scary)

3. st.joes....a good hospital with a good reputation...big, but not like tgh. i would think it is kinda middle of the road when compared to uch and tgh. christian, so if that is your faith, a positive. i really don't know a whole lot about st.joes....

so any thoughts on the above...do my suppositions make sense? i'm so afraid of choosing the wrong location..once you choose it...that is your life for two years, so it is, to my way of thinking, a very big decision to make.

what matters most about clinicals is that you as a student seek out all opportunities to learn. no one will take your hand and show you everything, ask questions! get to know your floor. get as much exposure to many different floors, units, hospitals as you can. this is your time to learn.

it also depends on what your clinical instructor will let you do (such as admin meds, start ivs, suction traches, start foley catheters, straight catheters, draw blood labs, program the iv machine, pull meds out of the pyxis/accudose, electronic charting or paper charting, accuchek, administer insulin, give im shots, bathe clients, ambulate clients.. do it all! accompany your patients to xray, dialysis, ct scan, echo lab, sonogram, stress test) [but of course, ask your clinical instructor first. get permission from charge nurse, your assigned nurse]... if you are allowed to do so, they will let you.

i graduated dec. 2011, completed 2 semesters clinical's at sjh & 2 semesters at tgh, leadership/preceptorship at tgh... it's a combination of you as a student coming to class prepared, know the assigned skills. get to clinicals on time! do your care plans! do your med cards. assess your patients!

you dont necessarily need to have brand new books, practice nclex style questions. get kaplan's strategies for nclex study guide, youtube skills if you didn't get the mosby cds. use older edition books you can get from amazon, ebay, craigslist. don't procrastinate, study! nclex made easy is a good book. med surg made easy is also a good book. get flash cards. use iphone apps with nclex questions! good luck :)

skad33, I do have the older version but the problem is that the instructor wanted us to have Nursing Fundamental and SLS simulation online. If there is a way to get away from that, I would love to. The online version have videos.

OH yeah, we ran across that too a few times in various semesters. Just tell your instructor you don't have it, hopefully she'll work with you on this. Sometimes pages vary, but just look at the table of contents or the back of the book. One semester we had to do case studies, but even students that paid for the brand new books couldn't access. Some teachers printed them for us to work on if it's for a grade.

When we went to the student lab, we ended up watching You Tube videos sometimes :/

I don't remember what the SLS is but we had Elsevier, some didn't have brand new books with access codes. See if you can buy Access only, not sure but might be about $60. I hope that helps, I know it took me long to answer, busy panicking for the nclex & now its done, passed :) Hang in there & best wishes.

I know this is a nursing board, but I applied for the Radiography and Radiation Therapy programs. Today Ms. Flores informed me that the Health Science Committee will be meeting in early May for the selection of applicants. I can't seem to find a board for either of these programs  does anyone know anymore info???? thanx

Wow...long time, no post... lol. Hope everyone had a great 1st semester! On to the next!

Yeah, I was coming here to see if anyone had said anything! LOL

I hope you guys in the other classes had a better time than we did.

Here's to our next semester...in 4 months....uhg. I think I'll have forgotten a lot of stuff.

Which professor did you have? Our class was great, a good number of us rec'd A's, although we had Town and Country as our hosp, and, while it wasn't HORRIBLE, it wasn't great either. Too small. Was looking forward to St.Joe or TGH, and then found out that next semester we have the same dang hospital again. Blah!

I know how you feel about the whole forgetting thing, going to try and go over notes, due a little further research on things that I only skimmed over in prep for exams, just to try and keep it all fresh.

Hello RnNtrainng, I have some questions for you in spring 2013, page 8 I believe, when you have time. Thank you.
