I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.
My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*
I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)
Wish me luck!!!
ohhhh, I read it as dont register for classes. Didnt realize we couldnt register for CPR either
Oh ok, well on my acceptance letter it talks about the CPR certification and says "The American Heart Association is the preferred organization for CPR, for they follow the AHA guidelines. Please do not attempt to register prior to you attending Orientation." So, I'm guessing it means for CPR. (You could always email M.F. to find out for sure!)
I have been *told* by a friend of mine that they know someone who did the CPR class before Orientation and had to retake it...(don't know how true that is, since it's just hear-say, lol). That would be a drag though!
I was first denied because I did not fulfill the math requirement. I took Math for Liberal Arts, which was acceptable when I STARTED at HCC but apparently is not now. I just got my acceptance letter 3 days ago saying they reevaluated my application and I am now accepted!
"Your prerequisite GPA was calculated using MGF 1106 or MGF 1107 because erroneous information was published on parts of our website. Although this course was used to fulfill admissions requirements, MAC 1105 remains a program graduation requirement."
So I still have to take College Algebra, but at least I'm in! Got accepted at Plant City, but I really wanted South Shore!! I did not see South Shore as a choice on the application though. It really sucks because South Shore would be 10-15 minutes from my house, and Plant City is 40 minutes (without traffic!).
I'm super excited though, I had given up on HCC and was about to register to take the TEAS to get into Erwin. I'd already taken the TABE.
Does anyone know the policy on pregnancy? I am due around June 24th. Do we get a summer break?
EDDjune24:
Congrats on your acceptance! Yes, MAC1105 is a new requirement...I wasn't happy about it either. lol
As for the schedule, HCC's nursing program is 4 semesters long (Spring '11, Fall '11, Spring '12, Fall '12) so, yes we'll have a summer break! According to HCC's calendar, classes end May 9th and the fall semester will start toward the end of August.
I have been told that if we're not happy with our times/campus, that we'll have the option to switch with someone at orientation (if someone else wants to switch with you, of course).
So, once again, congrats!!!
Oh, I forgot to mention about your pregnancy...I'm not sure about the policy. You definitely should ask about that (maybe email M.F.). I am not sure what's involved with the labs....or if that could be an issue. I have a friend who was due in Feb and although she was 'accepted' for the Spring '10 start, they didn't allow her to start and made her start this fall. (Of course that's different than your situation, because you're due AFTER the semester is over).

Thanks! I already sent in the acceptance and did the background check because the way I see it, they cannot discriminate against me because I am pregnant. Especially since I figured we might be on summer break by the time I'm due. I guess the big question will be my ability to perform well in clinicals. I'm reading through all the old posts on here about buying stethescopes, scrubs, and books... I'm assuming they will provide us with all that information at orientation? I am pretty overwhelmed right now with finding out I'm pregnant, finding out I got accepted, taking a full schedule of classes right now, about to move... I can't even THINK about researching stethescopes and such.

Wow, you have a lot on your plate right now! LOL Well, first of all, congrats on your pregnancy! :)
Yes, they will let us know all of that at our Orientation! The only way some of the other girls and I know about what to get/not get is from the fall '10 students who have been very helpful on this forum! HCC recommends a Littmann stethoscope, and our scrubs have to be white bottoms and port wine tops(most brands only have "wine" and the majority of them are the same color). The books can be bought from the HCC bookstore in a package, so that's easy. But, you don't have to get any of that before Orientation, so you have a couple months to research/shop! I would recommend NOT waiting until the last minute though, because you might need to order some things online (such as a maternity scrub top), and you need enough time to get it (and ship it back if it's not gonna work)!! To help you cut down on your research time, I'll let you know that a couple of us on here ordered our stethoscopes from www.medisave.net . They have free engraving, and very fast shipping. I can also recommend shopping online at www.UniformAdvantage.com or www.ScrubsAndBeyond.com , I have ordered from both stores. I'm having the hardest time finding shoes though....comfortable shoes, that is. Another site that many ppl on this forum shop at is www.AllHeart.com . I haven't ordered anything from them though.
I don't think they would discriminate either, and I think the only reason they had my friend postpone her start date into the program is because she was due so soon after it began...they knew that it would be better for her to start a semester later, rather than have to miss part of the course.
thanks for the links, thats awesome! and yeah, that makes sense about your friend if she was due in feb then it would only be a month into the semester! Feeling a little better about it now, I was super anxious about finally getting accepted then maybe not being able to do it. It actually sounds perfect to end class may 9 and begin late august. i'll basically get my last month and a half - 2 months of pregnancy out of school, then almost 2 months after baby is born! hopefully all goes well.
on another note, i can't believe orientation is SO long, it's going to be fun battling traffic and finding a parking spot in dale mabry! and i'm going to have to miss yoga and statistics to go. i love going to yoga! lol =(
EDDjune24,
I get to miss a couple of classes too....I don't mind (none of them are fun, lol), but I'm gonna be SOOOO lost. I guess I'll have to get notes from someone in my class and/or meet with my instructors. Ugh. BUT, I'm excited although I've been told it's very boring...and they take 2 days to tell us stuff that could be emailed to us.
I have heard something about a physical exam, drug test, and vaccinations that we are going to need. Does anyone know if we can have that all done during orientation? Or do we have to go elsewhere for it?
