Role Transition in the NICU

Hello, everyone!

This is is my first post to allnurses, so hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong board.

I am finishing up my ADN this spring, and have just been given my role transition assignment - in the NICU! I never thought I would be so lucky to be placed in the NICU, as it wasn't a choice on our guidelines (though we were told to write in a "dream" placement if we wanted to). Luckily, I guess my GPA was great enough and my recommendation letter glowing enough for my instructor to work hard to find me a placement.

I have always felt called to the NICU, and I am beyond thrilled that I get this wonderful opportunity.

My questions for everyone on this board are:

1) Are there any very pertinent or enlightening EBP articles that you would recommend that I read prior to my first shift?

2) I already plan on reviewing some notes and important passages from my pediatrics course, but are there any specific disorders/NICU-specific care recommendations that I should be aware of prior to beginning this assignment?

And of course, any other advice that you may have would be greatly appreciated! I want to soak up as much information as I possibly can prior to my first shift, in order to provide the safest and most comforting care to these special patients.

Some common disorders that we deal with. Depending on the level of NICU, you may see some or none at all:

PDA-Patent Ductus Arteriosus

NEC- Necrotizing Enterocolitis

gastroschisis/ omphalocele

myelomeningocele

tetralogy of fallot

micro preemie- less than 800g or

RDS- Respiratory Distress Syndrome

NAS- neonatal abstinence syndrome
