Role of a band 5 children's nurse

Published

Hi everyone.I am a newly qualified children's nurse. I have a question here asking about the role of a band 5 nurse. If i was asked about the role of a staff nurse not specifically band 5, then i would give the 7 main responsibilities of a staff nurse according to NMC.These are:

1.Respecting patient individuality

2. Obtain consent before any treatment

3. Cooperate and work effectively with in MDT to provide best care.

4.Protect patient confidentiality

5.Maintain my professional knowledge and competence: by keeping updated with ward and trust protocols and legislations, advance knowledge by attending courses and study days to improve the care i provide.

6.Be trustworthy

7.Act to identify and minimise risk to patients i.e. Child protection.

But how should i answer the question if i am asked about the role of a specifically band 5 children's nurse?

Hope someone can help me answer this.

Thank you.

Hi Sam, I take it you are thinking about interview questions, my suggestion would be to take a look at the job description and take important aspects of that to anwer your question. I am not a childrens nurse but the principle is the same for all nursing.

If I was interviewing I would want to know that you had insight into what the role of a qualified nurse, planning, implementing evaluating care for a group of children / patients and responding to changes within the conditions of you patients to ensure that the needs of the child and family are met.

Making sure that you are giving safe competent care and acknowledging that you are also responsible for members of staff who are unqualified and students therefore you will need to supervise and monitor care provided by unqualified members of the team.

Collaborating with all members of the multidiscplinary team to plan a treatment plan and make sure that this plan is appropriate to meet the needs of the child and family.

Acting as an advocate for your patient when they are unable to do so, working with the most vunerable members of society who may not have a voice you are looking at child protection issues here as well.

Can't think of much more now but as I said take a look at the job description it should give you a few more ideas.

Thanks. Your post has been very useful. I take your comments on board and your suggestion to look at job description. But you have already been a lot of help, as you given me some of the main responsibilities of a staff nurse. So thanks again.
