Hi I live in the Tampa Bay area and work in a snf. It would be nice to hear from nurses in snfs regarding whether or not they have become or know of RNs sho become supervisors by default, when the other nurses are LPNs. And are they compensated for being a working supervisor. Also, are there any facilities out there that still have a desk supervisor on 3 to 11?

I intentionally hire, or promote, to the supervisor position. The only ones who end up doing it by "default" are primary nurses who fill in if the sup calls off (and they volunteer). I also have terrific LPN supervisors on days.
On 3-11 we have a house (desk nurse) supervisor, as well as on nights.

We've only had fill in supervisors by default....called it the sup de jour! Some of the RN's resented having an LPN tell them what to do...our 3-11 supervisors do just that..supervise. We try to keep them off the med cart because they have their own work to do. We call the RN the supervisor and the LPN the shift coordinator. We try to promote from within the building and have a program to train prospective DON's in the company

I don't think it's a matter of whether the RNs resent the LPNs--generally, your Nurse Practice Act doesn't allow LPNs to supervise RNs, regardless of their actual skills.
