RN Teaching Jobs? Liberal Arts Degree?

Published

Hello, I've been lurking on this site for quite a while now. I am currently a senior nursing student in Southern California. After getting this far into the nursing program, i'm beginning to have my doubts about whether or not nursing is really for me anymore.

My question is, does anyone know the current requirements for teaching in California? I've been told many things such as "just go get a teaching certification" or "go get a PhD".

On top of that people keep telling me that requirements in California keep changing thus requiring a PhD to teach as a nurse.

I'm really confused about all of this.

I've always wanted to teach (i was a tutor for 3 years in high school), but stories from my old teachers about job hunting didn't sound fun back when i was in high school and my parents convinced me into going into nurisng. I'm honestly considering just paying off my loans, start working part time afterwards, grab a liberal arts degree somewhere and teach with that, while keeping my RN status active.

Your answer about minimum qualifications for teaching in CA lies with the CA Board of Education or whatever they call it. I know my nephew had a liberal arts BA, didn't know what he wanted to do, did some substitute teaching, liked it, and had to take something like another year of coursework to qualify as an elementary school teacher there.
