an rn can work as a scrub nurse, but if you don't have prior experience with scrubing you prob. won't be considered for the tech position. example: i am an or nurse and during my internship we were taught to scrub and circulate, therefore i could scrub cases if needed. they prob. won't train you to do that job since scrub techs go through specialized training to do that job. i would say that you should get the managers number and call them/e-mail them tell them that you have applied and this (ob nursing) is what you really want to do. thats what i did in the nicu. and i have to say its working. got me around the whole hr portion of everything plus 2 interviews and basically a job offer. good luck!

well the job description says surg tech preferred, but not required. i am trying to get the managers number and get around hr.thanks!
Used to be an OB tech... fun job! However, I doubt they'd let you into that position since you hold an RN license. Especially in a highly litigious specialty such as OB... too easy to cross that line between the scopes of practice and many hospitals won't take on this liability. If you do something within the RN scope while employed with them as a tech, their liability/malpractice insurance wouldn't cover you if litigation happened. And you can be trained OJT for this position, even though some hospitals have gotten away from this and want CST's only, just FYI for anyone.
I agree with trying to contact the manager directly and just express how much this area appeals to you as an RN. You never know, it just might work!
Good luck!

I have had my eye on a certain hospital's birth center for 2 years. They recently had 2 OB RN positions that I applied for but was told by HR I won't be considered because I don't meet the 1 yr RN experience.
Today there are 6 OB Tech positions up! I am considering a PT one just to get on this unit. I know they are currently expanding this unit hopefully to be done by 2012, and it looks likt it will be awesome. I really want to work here!
Is it worth it to work as an OB Tech as an RN,can it be done, and will it be looked upon favorably for other OB positions? It does say in the job description assisting RN in care of labor and delivery pts, newborn, and postpartum as well as OR tech.
Any ideas for getting around HR and talking to the manager for a RN position?
