I have been wanting to do this for years (becoming a nurse). I come from a family where alot has happened, therefore I have had NUMEROUS setbacks with becoming a nurse. A couple of years ago I thought OK maybe nursing is not for me why not try something else to save my grief of not having a career, steady income and to be able to things for fun as in being able to have room to splurge a little and not have to worry about OH am I going to have enough money left over? I thought it would be terrible to waste a HECK OF A LOT OF TIME (YEARS) to become that great nurse I have always wanted to be, why not pursue another career path (occupation) and to just move on and get a good paying job doing something else.
Well, after months and then years of making ends meet, their is nonthing else that I am interested in truly doing!! I have researched alot of career paths and not one really excites me or I think would be a good (fit). After all of this I have typed, what I am trying to say is that the NLN test pre entrance exam VERY, VERY EMBARRASING AND SAD TO SAY is what is holding me back from getting into the program for RN. The MATH is what has been killing me. It is so bad I am going to websites for 1st - 5th grade MATH, then 6th-8th grade MAth, then 9th-12th grade Math, then College Math practice study questions LUCKILY WITH ANSWERS (the answers are like gold, seriously)
This trails back to my family up bringing. When I went to Elementary, Middle School and High School at home I did not get proper training from my parents with school Academics which has set me back 10 - 15 years from my peers literally. I have struggled so hard with Academics heavily with MATH that it has set me back 10 - 15 years. That is something that I was born into and I did not have control over my upbringing as a child and young adult. But I have left that nest of struggle, poverty, and heartache with my immediate family. My family is still together as of today as of my biological mom and dad never divorced six kids total which is a very good thing but if children are not trained and raised for survival in the world as in getting through a program of study at a college which is necessary for a degree then that child will harshly suffer a great deal of failure and poverty. I don't know why my parents did not teach us real world survival skills or teach us the ropes of achieving and excelling in academics which is a major necessity. I don't know alot of things and I have been set back with ignorance and niavete due to my upbringing but I am learning and determined and can say that I have actuallly gained an enormous amount of wisdom due to my determination of landing a career that will provide some stability of survival of life. Luckily, I am still in my early 30's , is 30 something too late to begin the RN program which lasts around 2 years? If I ever have children, I know that they must be trained properly in order to stay ahead of the pack which is staying away from poverty, acheiving academics, being provided for the list goes on. That is not an easy job!
I know this is a lot to read but it's for a good cause!!!

things change. our circumstances change. as we get older we get wisdom. give it a try again, you might be surprised at what you can accomplish when you have a purpose. i failed high school trig miserably and was scared of chemistry. chemistry was required for nursing and it is what held me back from going to nursing school for a long time. i finally decided that if i wanted to be a nurse i was going to have to suck it up and take it. i cleared everything and made sure it was the only class i was taking. to my surprise, i did extremely well. where had that fear come from all those years? who knows. it lead me to retake trig many years later just to prove to myself that i could correct what i had messed up so long ago in high school. and i did it. i managed to ace the class. we put a lot of junk on ourselves for a lot of silly reasons and it sits there over time and festers like an infected wound. we have the power to change it--immense power. it is all in knowing how to apply and use that power.
studying is a learned skill that we get better at with practice. see https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/study-strategies-254733.html - study strategies

You're wise to be reviewing math all the way back to the beginning. Math builds on itself year after year and if you miss some of the foundations then the rest will never really make sense. Make sure you get that basic stuff down.
I've done a lot of tutoring in math, chemistry, and physics and the two biggest problems that I've seen are (a) the lack of understanding of the fundamentals and (b) the unwillingness to spend time working on them.

Be confident that you can learn this new material. We often have baggage but don't trip on it! =)
Try using my favorite math book: Math for Meds (Anna Curren). It has helped so many students because it provides different approaches for solving the same problem. Different people solve problems differently (wow, that's profound, huh?)
What about your school's Academic Success/Tutoring Center? Schools often provide free tutoring for their students.
I wish you all the success in the world! You CAN do this!
