RN with a non-nursing Bachelors?

Published

Hi y'all!

I was looking into MSN programs and see several that say that you either have to have a BSN, OR be a "Nurse with a Bachelors degree in another discipline." My question is how would someone be a Nurse with a bachelors in another discipline? Do these people have ADNs? I thought you couldn't sit for the NCLEX-RN unless you have either a BSN or an ADN. Am I wrong in thinking that?

Thanks,

-L

I have seen some direct entry BSN-MSN programs. If you google those keywords, schools will come up that offer the program. I do know from research that one with a BA in another discipline could apply to the direct entry program. Good luck.

Lots of people come into nursing already holding a BA/BS in another discipline (and then complete a diploma program or ADN). Or, they completed a diploma or ADN program, and then completed a BA/BS in another subject. Lots of folks out there are RNs with a BA/BS degree in something else.

It's most definitely possible for someone to be a Diploma RN and possess a Bachelor's in any other discipline. That, by definition, would make them a "Nurse with a Bachelor's degree in another discipline." That definition would also include the ADN that has a Bachelor's in a discipline other than nursing.

Many times, the nurse that has a 1st Bachelor's is the person for whom nursing is a second career. It is also highly possible that the same person could qualify for an ELM program and have a nursing masters as their first nursing degree. That person would sit for the same NCLEX as the ADN and the BSN.
