RN NCLEX several years after graduating

Published

Help please, I completed my LPN in 2014 and passed my board, began working as an LPN while completing my RN year. After graduation I took my boards but sadly did not pass. Attempted again a second time and did not pass. When my 3 years were close to ending to be eligible to sit for my boards I attempted a third time and for a third time was given all the questions possible and still did not pass. It has now been several years since my last attempt. Now I have held an active LPN and still working to this day. Does anyone know if I have to complete another 2 years of schooling or just my RN year to able to sit for my boards again. I live in Illinois. Thanks for any help you can give.

Have you called the Illinois BON or looked at their website? I didn't know that you can only take NCLEX 3 times in Illinois before remediation is required. Here is what I found on the board site under rules

Quote

3)         If the examination is not passed within 3 years from the date of application, regardless of jurisdiction in which the examination was written, the applicant shall not be permitted to retake the examination until the applicant has enrolled in a NCLEX review course.  The applicant shall submit proof to the Division.  This subsection (b)(3) does not apply to applicants who are licensed in another jurisdiction.

You will need to call to find out "what is an acceptable NCLEX review course". Since it has been 7 years since graduating, this would be a good idea irregardless of your not passing 3 times. Something to look for in a review course would be test-taking strategies such as what to look for in questions such as "all that apply". Since you have continued to practice as an LPN, that is an asset.

I found this on the internet - are you near Harper College or can you do an online section?

Just an idea but I do not know if this is what the BON nursing rules means.

I am not dissuading you, we have had many AN members who pass after taking the test many times. Good luck.

Awesome thank you so much, this is a lot of help. I am not close to Harper but online is definitely an option!!

I did not mean Harper is online. The page I read said "blended" format which usually includes face-to-face classroom with online but I do not know what 'blended' means at Harper. You will need to investigate the program to see what the method of instruction is. Also, I reread the Illinois BON rules and they do not say what programs are approved. You will still need to contact them .
